This is potentially massive.

Has spiralled quickly.

Michael Warner has someone who is leaking

He claims in a nutshell that about 100 players have been granted immunity by the practice. This practice is to either where a test is positive to not compete on match the day to avoid being caught “in competition “ and/or claim a mental health exemption so that the strike does not tally up.

The mental health exemption is massively abused by those using it to avoid a penalty. If you put in place a get out clause then expect it to be rorted. I believe on very solid grounds that one player recently retired used it over 20 times.

Under the secret scheme, medico insiders have revealed to The Advertiser that players who register a positive result in the days before a game are advised by their doctors to fake a minor injury or claim to have an illness so they are pulled from the team and cannot be caught by Sports Integrity Australia (SIA) tests on game day.

A defiant AFL declared on Wednesday that it was “unapologetic” over the emergence of the secret scheme, saying it was committed to “player wellbeing and welfare” and claiming because the players were not taking the field, they were not breaching anti-doping rules.

“We’re talking about a very small handful of players and it is private medical information,” league boss Andrew Dillon said.

But footy insiders said clubs were actively identifying cocaine users and placing them in what is called “the medical model”, where strikes are not counted.

“Even the cleanest clubs would have about five players on this so-called rehabilitation program,” one insider said.

“Some would have far more. Across 18 clubs we are talking maybe 100 players.”

Two other club medico sources confirmed the numbers.

One club insider described the whole program as “a mechanism to cover up drug use”.

Under the AFL’s three-strike drug policy, a second positive test outside match day would normally result in the player being named and shamed, fined $5000 and suspended for four games, with a third strike seeing them rubbed out for another 12 matches.

Positive match-day tests, which are overseen by SIA, could lead to a four-year ban.

SIA said on Wednesday it had started assessing allegations made by Mr Wilkie in parliament, but would make “no further comment at this stage”.

I'm all for doctor-patient confidentiality but the AFL have never gotten their drugs policy right. This is an opportunity.

Michael Warner wrote a book called The Boys Club about half a dozen years ago, and was a fair pot-shot as numerous aspects of the AFL.
It was written with a certain bent or bias, but thought-provoking nonetheless.

There was a part about Melbourne in around the early 2010's, similar to the subsequent Essendon saga, and the question lingered, unwritten, wondering if Melbourne issues were something the AFL didn't want to deal with, because aside from the scandal, they wouldn't have wanted another club potentially non-competitive like GC and GWS were at the time just having entered comp.

SET [Old Bastard Rage] = ON

How many of us would be kicked out on our arse if we were caught taking recreational drugs at work.

With the massive salaries these days and the effort and sacrifice they need to make to have the fitness required to play, you would have thought that the AFL and the clubs would be able to stare down the Players Association to enforce illicit drug detection and penalties.

It’s not as if the Players Association are going to get much relief from the government industrial regulatory system to allow and condone the use of illicit drugs at work.

Yes, with the salaries they earn and lifestyle they lead, some are easy targets to go down the illicit drug path, and yes, it’s prevalent in society, but name one job outside that anyone on this site has that would not only condone illicit drug use at work, but would take steps to cover up its use.

Go on try it, tell your boss today what you took this morning before coming into work and see how you get on.

Grow some cajones AFL if you want to be taken seriously.

SET [Old Bastard Rage] = OFF

OK, as you were …
