I think everyone has a responsibility to a certain extent including those who would push individuals forward into the spotlight as role models.

If I had kids I think I'd prefer them to aspire to a Nobel Prize than become designer clothes horses but thats just my preference.

...and on a sporting level this story from my local news also brings up questions of ethnicity.

Yes, a business degree hmmm.. well..... One "studying law'' and may get a real qualiication if she finishes... and some secondary qualifications.
Hardly the pick of the aspirational crop as a bunch.

Yes, I lacked an ethnically compatible role model for going trekking in Borneo in 1991, but I went anyway. Ditto, no one led me, or directly and ethnically inspired me, into flying a light plane or having a go at piloting a glider, so I guess without the inspirational model I shouldn't have been able to do them.

Both these articles seem to support mediocrity and dependency as aspirational goals.
