Woolworths at Brighton all but force you to self serve. We do a fortnightly shop on Sunday morning (pretty busy time) When they first opened up they had 6,7 up to 8 checkouts serving you. Now they’ll have 2. I self served $450 worth of groceries not that long ago. I’m not standing in line behind 3 people with full trolleys.

Best part is there was $640 worth of groceries and he got it all for $450.

And no one quizzed him on who's "New Idea" magazine it was.

Could've gone to the 12 items or less checkout.

What I'd have done.
Would have forced them to open another register

Beauty of it all is everyone still has a choice, if you want to get served you still can, if you want to self serve you can, if you want to click and collect you can, if you want to online order and get delivered you can...not sure what the issue is, you actually have more choice.

No different to the complaints around banks closing their branches and ATM's. People pay for things with their phones or smart watches and then complain they can't access cash when it suits them.

Problem being it's not generally the ones paying for things with smart phones and watches that are complaining, It's Beryl and Harold who every Tuesday want to get their $20 in 4 x $5s and an extra $20 for their Grandson birthday this Friday who are the ones affected.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Not everyone can be categorised as such.

My Mum is 89, relies purely on cash and still has a pass book. No debit/credit cards and no digital presence.

He local bank branch closed down last year, so now has to do banking at the local post office, and I’ll take her the next nearest bank branch when required.

Admittedly, she’s a dying breed and the world is changing, but there’s more than a few of that generation who are in the same boat.
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

My parents are the same with cash.
And their nearest Coles very rarely has any checkouts open.
Self service only during the day

I actually don’t blame the banks for closing down branches and reducing front counter services, but you are making good profits and the federal govt has your back, so don’t steer your customers to the lowest cost services and then charge monthly fees to have the privilege of holding your customer’s funds whilst making a handsome profit on those funds.

Absolutely and it's no different to the checkout and ultimately Dutchy's point, the consumer is driving the change.

The more people use click and collect or self serve checkouts the less they need cash > banks close ATM's etc.

Some nutjob will say the illuminati is driving it all but hey....

Hence why I dont use self serve. The more we use it the more they will shut down the service.
Some of us remember the "full service" petrol stations - thing of the past now
The big two supermarkets are going down the same route
My local Aldi and IGA are still doing checkouts

Banks don't have transaction fees on bank accounts anymore, at least the ones I know of.

I pack mine into my bags at the counter, nobody rushing me or making me double handle my goods. The operator eventually has to stop scanning when theres no room left.
I dont do self serve ever, ill go through the 12 items or less with a full trolley if the service checkouts are too busy. If i ever get forced to use a self serve in the future i will get some bargains, im not an employee of the supermarket nor have i had training in how to properly scan items, nor have i had training in the difference between grapes and cherries.
I wont ever do click and collect or an online order especially when it comes to meat, i reckon i have a pretty good eye for quality.

I detest Aldi.
Why? Bad experiences?

Aldi has been good to me, just wish my local store (Port Adelaide) had more of the groceries I buy which would mean I'd never have to use Coles, although the Coles specials are very handy.

I also detest the Aldi checkouts and was very relieved when the PA Aldi put it their self serve checkouts. I love the self serve option.

I very rarely shop at Aldi. Last time I went I was waiting in line for a good 10 minutes as people were doing a weekly shop and I was just grabbing a couple of things... I get nearly to the front of the line, look to my left and there are the self serve checkouts unused...what an idiot I am.

On Aldi what is with closing checkout lanes every 30 seconds?

I think like others I'll only go into my bank now if I absolutely need to and the one thing that I've found annoying (and maybe other are the same) is my bank shortening their opening hours, banks closing at 4pm (and/or 5pm once a week) for people who work full time isn't ideal.
