I used to go through this rigmarole and finally decided enough was enough. As you mentioned there seemed to be better deals for some with no rhyme or reason why it should be so. We were on platinum as "Diamond Subscribers" since the late 90s and it made me feel like I was going cap in hand and asking for some sort of charity instead of what should have been a standard loyalty bonus.
I, too, used to go the disconnections route with varying levels of success. Eventually when I rang the last time I told the rep I wasn't interested in "analysing my viewing habits" or horse trading this or that package and that I was about to make him a one time only offer. $50 take it or leave it. After the usual "I'll have to talk to my manager", lo and behold the manager came on the line and he said he couldn't approve my offer and would like to analyse my viewing habits. Told him the $50 was off the table as it was one time only. Offer was now $40. He saw where this was going and asked me if I would like to disconnect at the end of the month. Told him "No now would be fine". Boxes were returned to parcel pickup within half an hour and I felt clean again.
I've never returned a box and never been charged for it, I kept them in the shed for a few months just incase but nothing.
Same.
