Is Checkmates still open? They had pole dancing instead of line dancing, but thankfully no nuts...

Seems a strange time to opening new restaurants, many hospo businesses are struggling.

Lonestar at Hallett Cove

Entrees
Pork belly bites - solid 7.5/10
Cheese n bacon garlic bread 1/10 - rubbish

Waygu rump $41 medium. Was solid by reports.
Sriracha ribs - my word it looked huge.... needless to say some of it was taken home. Fell off the bone and all reports was it was good. $55 did try a few chips and they were nice and crunchy
I went the steak and ribs combo. Steak cooked perfectly medium. The pork ribs were really good, and meat slid off the bone. The accompanying coleslaw was sound and mash was good. $48......8/10

Hot dog sundae - 3 scoops Ice-cream on a warm brioche bun. Probably didn't need it. However it was ok. $15
Chocolate lava cake was light and fluffy the piece I had. $15

Overall $234 with drinks on side.

Solid feed.
Still feel full
The menu also had a range of schnitzels but you're not going there for a schnitty
Overall I'd go 7.5/10

The Chiton Restaurant @ the Chiton Rocks Surf Lifesaving Club

Used to be run by the surf club as the Chiton Beach Cafe, now privately run.

Frutti di Mare $35
melt in your mouth salt & pepper squid, battered fish, prawns, nice salad and chips

just right serve, not too many chips but enough. 8/10

Pasta Marina $31
Goolwa Pipi, prawns and squid in a white wine and garlic cream sauce with squid ink linguine

Missus loved it, didn't quite finish. 8/10

Coffee was better than average, quite strong. 7/10

Didn't get desserts this time, but they're usually really good.

Well worth the trip, never had a bad meal there.

We had lunch on the balcony at HNLY yesterday

Great food and service
Reasonably priced wine list
Live music
9/10

Interesting discussion with the manager.
Terrible winter trade - worst they have ever had.
Only 2 table inside upstairs yesterday
Hospitality is really struggling because:
1. people have much less discretionary money
2. his power and staff costs have skyrocketed

3rd time this week I have heard the same story

Had a work colleague over of Iranian descent so it was decided we'd go to Naaz - Persian cuisine, Hazelwood Park. Not what I'd normally pick.

Started with KALEKABAB - Smoked Eggplant, Walnut, Pomegranate Paste and Touch of Garlic Served with Bread. Meh. Didn't finish it.

Mains went BAGHALI POLO BA MAHICHE - Slow Cooked Lamb Shank Served with Broad Bean, Dill, Rice and Persian Saffron
and Lamb Broth Mixed with Persian Saffron and Lemon. Shank fell off the bone, pity it was only one shank and small, too much rice but the lamb broth and lemon on the rice was excellent. At $36 it wasn't value and I left half the rice.

Didn't have dessert, wanted to get to Subway for a 6"* ASAP.

Not my cup of tea at all. Everything was mushy and had either eggplant or pomegranate in it.

Food - 5/10
Service - 8/10 only highlight

Do not recommend.
PAFC. Forever.

LOOK OUT, WE'RE COMING!

As per usual, whenever I go to a country town I need to sample a peppered steak pie from their bakery.

I tried to get one from the Barmera bakery (the one in the main drag near Foodland), they didn't have any so stupid me asked for a chunky steak pie.

At $7.30 I thought it was gonna be alright, it was full of gelatine with a few bits of meat, gave it a 3 and that was being generous.

The regular drive to Mildura a few years ago I always found Truro to be a bit of no-mans land, too close to home to stop in at, used to do Waikerie/Renmark then Mildura and same on the return (Blanchetown got banned with their $6.50 small bucket of anemic chips, $2.80 dimmy or $10 basic hot dog).

I just had to stop there though and try their pie out, bloody glad I did, perfect eating heat, great pastry, nice level of pepperage, you know it's good when you're nose starts running slightly, and a great meaty texture.................a solid 8.5 and possible entrant into the top 5.

South Gawler Bakery still holds the #1 spot.
Two Wells Bakery holds #2.
Got one in Yorketown that holds #3 spot.
The Cornish kitchen in Moonta would be next.

Port Elliott Bakery was a let down after all the hype, Kiplings are good but not great, I rate the Port Wakefield Bakery higher.

The one in Ardrossan was plain terrible..................just a few off the top of my head.

Eggplant and zucchini are the worst vegetables by a mile.

Folks at work regularly have to make a run into the country out towards the Murray, and the Truro bakery has become an obligatory stop on the way. It is highly regarded among the engineers here.

I can understand why, the GF got a beef, bacon and cheese sausage roll and that was a treat too.
