Having a management role over the past few years and leaving two employers in the past 18 months to further develop my skills there is one thing that gives me a razz and that is the look on someones face after you've shaken their hand and said "you've got the job".

It gives me great satisfaction every time, we've had a bit of a turnover since I've been in this role and I go into great detail when selecting new employees.

One thing that I have installed is that if I employ someone for a particular role, I get them trained up in two alternative roles beforehand, my predecessors had too many people pigeon-holed for one job only, it killed me for a while when I needed coverage for leave or absence, now they basically have their leave coverage worked out when they hand me their leave application.

Yeah mate, I'm starting to see the rewards although I'm mentally exhausted, I spent 6 months learning new systems etc. only to find that the place was a shit hole so I left and was presented a very attractive offer the next day. So I've inadvertently spent 18 months of intense training.

I've picked it up pretty well though and have earned the trust of everyone here, my opinions and plans are welcomed and backed.

25 degree day.

Mowed the back lawn, pulled a few weeds. Watered some plants.

Sipping a cold beer, taking in the view.

Sun on my back.

Bliss.

Sitting up here in the Gold Coast after our eldest daughter’s gymnastics competition up here this week.

Tuesday was prelims to decide which division the team would compete in. Coaches thought they would end up in the bottom division (Division D) due to an injury to one of the strongest gymnasts who was unable to compete and then another gymnast not being able to compete due to a stuff up in organisation. The 4 girls left put up a strong performance on Tuesday and actually qualified for Division C.

Today was the finals and the 4 girls absolutely smashed it and actually ended up coming 2nd overall in Division C.

Nobody saw that coming…

What an afternoon that was.

Now another couple of days up here on the coast before returning to normality. :)

Losing Dad a couple of weeks ago was really tough and as posted in another part of the forum, made me reflect a little on my connection to the SANFL.

Dad was a Life Member - as an Official at Sturt and lots of my best memories remain of those times as a kid at the Club with him. He wasn't a high profile official - he was an assistant coach, team manager, selector and administrator, primarily with the U17 and U19 squads.

What I rate, is the reaction and thoughts of many who knew him from those times (up to 44 years ago). Coaches he worked with, players who came through at the time. Its been fantastic to see, read and hear their thoughts and be reminded of who knew him and the impact he had on them too.

Priceless memories given some new life.
