CELEBRITY Australian of the Year.
I'd love to see a firefighter or a palliative care nurse 'win' it.
What does Lee Kernahan do?
SING?!

BIG DEAL! :vom:

WOO HOO, an Australian who sings like an American, Australian of the Year, FANTASTIC!

Yes, he might do wonders for everyone in the world re: donating money, but I have a fundamental problem with Australian's selling out their nationality to become famous.

I WOULD SAY THIS LADY:

AUSTRALIAN OF THE YEAR
Lois O'Donoghue CBE AM (b. 1932 )
1984 Award

Aboriginal Leader
Born in South Australia of a Pitjantjatjara mother and Irish father, O'Donoghue, aged two, was taken from her mother to a United Aboriginal Mission Children's Home. There she was trained for domestic work and did not see her mother again for 33 years. Her political career began when she had to fight a long battle for her right to train as a nurse. In 1967 O'Donoghue joined the Department of Aboriginal Affairs and by 1975 had become its regional director in South Australia. In 1977 she was the foundation chair of the National Aboriginal Conference, chair of the Aboriginal Development Commission, 1989-90, and, more recently, chair of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC).

Kernhan's doing his job as well, and gets paid way more.
Why is he more special than the others?
And ask yourself these questions, If your house is on fire, do you want a firefighter putting it out
or a singer serenading you?
And if you ever have the misfortune of having a terminal illness and can't look after yourself,
do you want a nurse wiping your arse or someone yodelling? :?
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

Lee Kernaghan didn't get Australian of the Year just for his music contribution, he also got it for the work he does in country communities both financial and in other ways.

The past ten years
2008 Lee Kernaghan OAM (born 1964)
2007 Professor Tim Flannery (born 1956)
2006 Professor Ian Frazer (born 1953)
2005 Dr Fiona Wood AM (born 1958)
2004 Steve Waugh AO (born 1965)
2003 Professor Fiona Stanley AC (born 1946)
2002 Patrick Rafter (born 1972)
2001 Lieutenant-General Peter Cosgrove AC MC (born 1947)
2000 Professor Sir Gustav Nossal AC CBE (born 1931)
1999 Mark Taylor AO (born 1963)
1998 Cathy Freeman OAM (born 1973)

Hardly a entertainers paradise there. Lee is the first entertainer to win it in the past ten years. Is it so bad to recognise some ones work if they are a singer ?
Interesting the past three captains of the Australian Cricket team (Waugh, Taylor & Border) all got it.
The last entertainer (and more) who won the award was Mandawuy Yunupingu back in 1992.
