We've got a tv show here that is all about ways to save money. I put a link up on the Airlines Tips and Tricks thread but some of the other stuff might be useful too. A lot will probably apply to UK only but you might find some ideas.

Withdraw money using EFTPOS rather than an ATM - most banks condiser the transaction (ie paying for purchase and withdrawing money) as only on transaction rather than two if you were to do them seperately. Do this a couple of times a month and it reduces bank fees.

Drop your dirty shirts in the welfare bins. The next week you can buy them back at 50c apiece and they've all been washed and ironed!

I had a school mate whose mum use to make him bring his glad wrap from his lunch home so she could wash it and hang it out to dry and then reuse it.

Most of these suggestions only work if your time is worth very little - how about work harder/longer, make more money and forget about chiselling for tiny savings.

Set yourself $x for the days needs, lunch etc. then put the left over money into a money tin that cant be opened.

is amazing how much loose shrapnel u get each day, and how quick it adds up.

Me too. In fact I've only been working a 30 hour week in the last two years, having set myself up in the past, and I'm about to cut that back further.

It is just that so much of this savings stuff works out at so little per hour of effort it doesn't seem worth bothering. It reminds me of an article I read a while ago looking at burglars' earnings on a per hourly rate, which suggested they would actually do better in a normal job.

Psyber, that is all well and good for those on large enough salaries or with the option that they can get extra hours. However, for those struggling and unable to get more work, cutting back on any expenditure they can can be a godsend in allowing them to save for any 'luxury' in life or just to be able to get through life a little easier.

Cheers

My time is worth as much as yours. I reckon working longer is a waste of time (particularly for those on a salary), valuable time spent with the family pays much more than any job ever could for me.

I see your point, but so far I haven't seen a serious suggestion that would save more than could be earned in an hour of casual bar work.

I suspect the big real savers at a personal level are the unpopular ones - give up beer, cigarettes, and all gambling.

Speculations for major savings:

If you have the cash replace all light globes with low energy ones - it will pay in the long run, but keep the dockets as they tend not to last the time they promise like the older ones did before they were made in China.

Scrap other heating for Hydronic - espensive to put in but will pay for itself and save in reasonable time. [Not that anyone in Adelaide needs heating. ]

Solar Energy? - may pay for itself in time... maybe...

Make you next car a diesel or diesel/electric hybrid and save on fuel ... but diesel fumes contain 2 major cancer causing chemicals so perhaps they should be banned.
