Barnesy's plea for northern suburbs

Just for you FC....we live in Craigmore, My wife and I grew up in Elizabeth (North and Downs) I became a Tradesman, and now work at Holdens.
My Eldest son, who is 17, left school at the end of last year (year 11) after completing a Certificate 1 course in Electro-Technology. He desperately wants to get an Apprenticeship, but has not been able to get one. My point here is, you said people have cars and do not have to find work in their own area, and that is quite true, I worked in Kent Town and Norwood during my Apprenticeship. But that was a long time ago, and my son recently had an interview, in Magil, 30 kms away. He said everything seemed to go very well until the man interviewing him said he was worried about him living so far away .Needless to say, he did not get the job. The kid has done just about everthing possible to get a full time job .(he does work part time in a pharmacy though) I think that where you live, does matter.

PS... It's not like he is one of those idiots hanging around with nothing better to do. He plays soccer at Federation level and was Captain for three out of the last five years.

PSS... We travel to a lot of different suburbs for soccer, and most look just the same as ours......

That's great TS, because your hard work ethic has rubbed off on your kids, and no doubt will rub off on his.. however no where in my post have I said that I think every single person that comes from Elizabeth is destitute, hell DW and Smac have better jobs than I do!

However, it still doesn't mask the fact that there are many families out that way that don't share your enthusiasm to earn a living.. I'm not talking about the kids who are genuinely trying and can't.. I'm talking about the ones who are quite happy to be on Kevins surf team.

1982 release I think.

It's actually about how school grades aren't necessarily as important as some make them out to be. You can be a success without succumbing to the belief that getting top marks and going to uni are the only way to achieve with your life.

I did 3 years of voluntary work at a youth drop in centre in Elizabeth and Smithfield Plains. I wanted to do it because I grew up in the area and I wanted to make a difference and give back to the community that taught me so much.

Unfortunately most of the kids had no chance because of their parents. I saw drunk parents turning up and abusing their children. One Mum actually broke the arm of another girl. I saw kids who had been beaten up. One kid had stabbed his Dad because he was beating up his Mum. How do you suppose those kids can lead any kind of unaffected life? They were generally good kids, they just needed new parents.

It was quite depressing realising that no matter what you did you couldn't help. These kids have no hope unless they can escape their parents.

But everyone can make a small change. Next time someone tells you they are from Elizabeth don't look at them like they are nothing. Don't make an audible gasp. I have had this most of my life. It affected me greatly when I was younger to the point that I would avoid the question when asked. Now I have a quiet chuckle to myself when I hear people bagging people from Elizabeth because generally they're people who haven't achieved half of what I have.

It doesn't matter where you grow up, if you're a good person, you're a good person. Some people seem to forget this.

He has played for so long now, I've said to my son that if he wanted to stop playing soccer now, he could, because I have done my job and kept him away from the streets and out of trouble. All of his mates are the same, almost all of his team mates come to my house and we treat them like part of the family, and the best part is, they treat us like mates too....not just someone elses parents.
Parents have a lot to answer for......

I'm not saying i'm the best dad....but I know I'm not the worst....

great posting guys - we as parents determine how our children turn out and unfortunately a lot of kids have no hope whatsoever as the parents are feral and have no respect for themselves or anyone or anything - its a vicious circle, i live at christie downs and work at colonnades which is very similar to elizabeth
