What a proud day for Australians
Research has shown that Australia is officially the fattest nation in the world.

Baker Hart and Diabetes Institute have accorded the research

26% OF OZZIES NOW CONSIDERED OBESE
4 MILLION OZZIES NOW CONSIDERED OBESE
7 OUT OF TEN MEN, 6 OUT OF TEN WOMEN ARE OBESE OR OVERWEIGHT
ANOTHER 5.4 MILLION CONSIDERED OVERWEIGHT
123,000 OZZIES EXPECTED TO DIE OF WEIGHT RELATED HEART DISEASE IN THE NEXT 20 YEARS.

What a FAnTastic effort.

When you start 'talking bout my generation' WHO is partly responsible ...the school tuck shop

Unbelievable!
Recently watched a TV program that had a story about a fat family in America. They put a typical Japanese woman in with this family and she ate what they ate (though she couldn't quite match the quantity) for a whole day. The Dad weighed 160 kgs and was about 180cm tall, Mum weighed about 135 kgs and was 155 cms tall. The two kids had 125ml soft drink bottles surgically attatched to their hands, which could only be removed if replaced by a full 125 ml soft drink bottle. Potato chip packets were hidden in their bedrooms etc. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner was all high carbs, saturated fats, lots of sugar with a big feast of meat for dinner. The Japanese woman put on 3 kgs over the day and her waistline ballooned by about 7 cms, she was only about 50 kgs to start with.
The thing is, this family wasn't anywhere near the category of fat people I sometimes see waddling around in the background in news reports from teh U.S.
Are Australians really fatter than this? I find it hard to believe.

Theri, it all depends if the survey in Australia is done with the same methods in the US.

I am unsure on the US survey, but ours is somewhat misleading from what I have read. The survey summary (available here if you wish: http://www.aph.gov.au/house/committee/h ... sub008.pdf) states:

The report focuses on middle-aged Australians (45-64 years) given they have a higher combined prevalence of overweight/obesity when compared to other age groups and, therefore, are at greater risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and CVD. As a result they are most at risk of experiencing highly preventable cardiovascular-related hospitalisations and deaths (many of them premature deaths) relating to their excess weight over the next 20 years.

By the reports own admission they used a sample that was weighted (no pun intended) towards fattening (ok, pun intended this time) the result. In addition they have used BMI as the foundation for the findings, which is an index that is also flawed - failing to consider individual body differences such as muscle density or frame size.

I, for one, would be very surprised if we were fatter than the seppos.

On behalf of the 'fattest nation in Europe' I'd like to offer my heartiest congratulations to our friends in the colonies. Well done the Aussies...you must be so proud

Maybe the Olympic Committee could look at introducing eating contests as a new sport.

As they say up here...If it ain't deep fried in batter, it ain't real food

Cheers Smac, I knew there must have be something a little skewed about that report.
I am 176cm and 97kgs, which is pretty large, but going through San Francisco Airport a few years ago made me feel like an underweight lettuce for breakfast fanatic. You could imagine the ground moving with each step taken by some of the mammoths cruising around in there.
My Japanese sister in law did a home stay in Texas and was worried about getting mixed up with the potato salad such was the size of the bucket holding it and the massive scoop they used for serving. She's tiny compared to me, yet in that house at dinner time, one fat arm reaching across for more chicken was almost enough to smother her.
Very nice people though, so she said.

Mmmmmm Mars Bar

Thankfully haven't found it sold here but if you ask for a pizza in any chippy they will throw a frozen one into the fryer for a few minutes and serve that up with chips...fairly sure if you asked they would batter it first :-&

Image

...and according to Wiki...
This is a Mars bar which has been coated with batter and deep-fried in oil or beef fat. First reports of battered Mars bars being sold in Stonehaven[citation needed], Scotland date back to 1995[8], although an ice-cream vendor in Manchester claims to have invented it in the early 1990s.[citation needed]

Deep-fried Mars bars are available from some fish-and-chip shops in Britain, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.[citation needed]

...so it looks like most of you can share in Scotlands culinary greatness...just ask your local chippy   but if you're looking to fast-track yourself to obesity might I recommend the deep-fried blood sausage (black pudding)
