Troubled times

Postby Gator-Aid » Mon Nov 10, 2008 4:15 pm

I heard from a reliable source that a very large sports retailer that has recently taken over several stores in SA/WA is in serious financial difficulties. The losses they are incurring(approx $2 million per month) may well see them shut up shop.
Now that is just plain dumb, don't you think?

A Mart must be the ones struggling- they recently closed the former Rowe & Jarman site.
What is it with big business buying smaller businesses, & closing them down?

er weren't Rowe & Jarman were in financial strife too when A mart took them over?

Last time I went to my local A mart (Mile End) during footy season their range of stock was appalling and their remaining city store wasn't much better a few weeks ago when I urgently needed some cricket protective equipment

Not that Im aware of mate, although now you mention it there was a House & Garden type place upstairs that was vacant when I passed it about 2 weeks ago, so if they are moving I'd say that's where

I could be wrong here, but i believe Rebel and Amart are owned by the same people. They opened a Rebel store upstairs, as they believe the type of people who shop at West Lakes would prefer that to Amart. Amart is marketed as more a 'budget' store, where as Rebel is the premium store. I was told this by one of Amarts employees.

As i said though, i not 100% sure of this.

A-Mart and Rebel both operate at Elizabeth, pretty sure neither has closed down.

Harvey Norman used to own a majority stake in Rebel Sports but sold it 2 years ago to private equity firm Archer Capital. 2 years before that, Archer Capital acquired A-Mart All-Sports.

So, yes, they have the same owner. Archer Capital is into a range of things (mostly retail) one of which was recently looking into buying the Funtasmic Furniture chain.

I wouldn't be surprised if the downturn in retail spending is hurting them but I couldn't find anything quickly to confirm or otherwise

That was because their rent had gone up 67% in a year.

A prize for those who picked Amart. Big trouble in the financial sector of the business, their forte has always been in camping/fishing and looks like they're now "out of their depth" in sports stores. That's as official as I can make it!
Now that is just plain dumb, don't you think?
