Can anyone elaborate on what happened? Accident/deliberate? Suspension? Type of injury?

Luders led out and took a fairly routine mark, a couple of steps after he marked it S.Riley was running the opposite direction and raised his elbow which clipped Luders jaw and broke it quite severely.
Riley I don't think even got cited for it.
I saw the incident and it was definately a shocking thing for Riley to do BUT it looked like he hardly touched him both there and on the TV, must have just got him in the wrong spot.
Riley should have got many weeks for it.

Hit him flush, late and looked real bad and it was graphically highlighted on TV but back then if the ump didn't get you (he saw it and paid a 15 metre penalty but no report) there was no trial by video. It came in after that incident.

1985 Preliminary Final?
1986-1990
Definately 1991 GF.
*S Riley did retire for 1 year, 1990 i think, then came back (LL?)

That's right.
In the 85 prelim Geoff Morris and some other player tried to "square up" against Steven Riley and soon found themselves battling both Rileys. Only time I ever saw John Riley do anything untoward on a footy field.

But the team that left their mark on me was the sturt side of their golden era...!
Jack Oatey as coach....
The skills they showed were truly memorable....
Chessel, Bagshaw, Garret, etc.... My memory fades......
Truly the perfect team......
Port's golden era team must have been great also....
