I usually hate movies that get heaps of hype, so didnt watch this when it came out.
I watched it on Foxtel on Saturday night, and really enjoyed it. John Jarrott pissed me off though. Worst actor in history.
Tarantino is very good at writing scenes that create a lot of tension just from people talking. Some of Django talking scenes are compelling viewing. Like when the Dentist talks his way out of trouble in his first scene and then again walking out of the hotel to take down that Sherrif. Then there's the great scene with Leondardo and the skull and the hammer.
I really enjoyed Django until the last 15 minutes. I didn't hate the ending and I guess you can't watch a Tarantino film without seeing litres of blood and 100s of bodies It removed the reality of the whole movie for me. You could almost believe the rest of it could have happened (note "almost" ..). Then Django he turns into superman and suddenly the villians can't shoot to save themselves (like eg the ending of The Expendables).
I feel like this movie needed a cleverer ending to justify the quality of the writing up to that point. But I think Tarantino was trying to make a point about America's history with race relations and felt that was the best way to make it.
