Betting on Jockey Challenges

Postby whufc » Tue Nov 11, 2008 6:33 pm

As i am only a casual punter and need a question cleared up.
When betting on the jockey challenges obviously the winning jockey is given 3 points, second place jockey 2 pts and third place jockey 1pt.

In a race where there is less than 8 horses and therefore no third dividend does the third placed jockey still get a point? I think this may have caused me to loose a bet of mine as i was under the presumption they still would.

It's definitely 3, 2, 1 on any race, regardless of runners. I backed Ganderton in Sydney on Saturday and he scoed a point for his ride in the first when there were only 4 runners.

Cool, thanks for clearing that up, that will help alot next time i have a dab on them.

For someone like me who is not a serious punter i think they are brilliant in that they give you a reason to support every race at a venue. I have been doing one each for the Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney races on a Saturday and it's a whole days entertainment. As well as spending a couple of hours friday nights studying the fields and looking for a bit of a roughie.

Though IMHO there isn't alot of value to be made profit wise but i do stand corrected.

I must confess I am a JC addict..... studying the guide is important especially on the smaller fields as your jockey has more chance of scoring in the smaller fields...... eg as an example You would rather be on a 2nd fav in a 7 horse field than a fav in a 12 horse field IMHO.....

You definatly get points in any race no matter what amount of runners.....

It says 9 listed jockeys.... but it is always 7 and the 'any other ind jock' = 8 bets.

You always have the chance that a jockey will have a fall early in the meet, get crook, not arrive at track on time ect ect.
I know it is not the way to go (value wise) as the percentages they offer a generally very poor. But I shop arround to maximise my returns......
It is a good way to have a bet and have it last all day..... I like keeping tally of the 3,2,1 votes during the day also..... 1 votes are virtually useless I have worked out!!!!

Yeah im the same i love keeping count of the results and tallying it up, and strangely it's quite enjoyable cheering other horses not to win if one of my jockeys doesn't have a ride in the race.

But you are right there are massive variables such as scratchings and so forth.

I've developed a scale for allocating points to a jockey for each ride he/she has, based on the odds of the horse. Obviously, its accuracy depends on the quality of the markets used, but its a good guide to determine who should be in the mix. It was published in Practical Punting a few months after jockey bet started here, about 4 or 5 years ago. I have had some success with it.

Win
Dividend Points
1.00 75
1.01 60
1.50 60
1.60 58
1.70 56
1.75 55
1.80 54
1.90 52
2.00 50
2.10 48
2.25 46
2.50 45
2.75 43
2.80 42
3.00 39
3.20 37
3.50 35
3.80 34
4.00 32
4.20 30
4.50 29
4.75 28
5.00 27
5.50 25
6.00 23
6.50 22
7.00 21
7.50 20
8.00 18
9.00 16
10.00 15
11.00 14
12.00 12
14.00 11
15.00 10
17.00 9
21.00 8
26.00 7
31.00 6
34.00 5
41.00 4
51.00 3
61.00 2
101.00 1

The best bets are where a jockey's book of rides tally at least 160 points and they are at least 20 points above everyone else. If they are 40 points ahead, double the bet. (But you also have to factor your own opinion, there are just some blokes I will not back.)

Roughly 25 of my points equate to 1 jockey point, so you can also judge whether someone has had a good, average or bad day; ie if their tally was 150 points, they should score 6 points on an average day.

When jockey bet first started there were 9 listed jockeys plus "any other", so there was a field of 10 chances. At some point they reduced the number of named jockeys from 9 to 7.

i recall tabsportsbet having to payout on 'any other jockey' despite them saying the bet was a loser, the arbitrator decided in favour of the punter(s) & the word 'individual' now appears in the market

i recall my brother telling me that damien oliver was almost a certainty to win it at caulfield one day so we attacked & he ran 2nd or 3rd on an odds on favourite in the first & then went home sick....he wasn't as sick as my brother & i   :vom: :vom:

im very surprised that GRUB hasnt loaded up in the Jockey challenges in PERTH

JOCKEY CHALLENGES are good for a small investment and give you an interest all day long, but sometimes when you have a jock, say Oliver - since BAYMAN mentioned him is $1.35 to win the challenge - there is a big chance that you will get that for the place on his first ride.

im going to look into whether its better off to take a jocks rides as all up doubles for the day.

GRUB = any thoughts on that idea, since you are the Jockey challenge champion

Dont mind the idea MT as generally a winning double is needed to win.... although 3 seconds are just as good dont forget

Ash - Looking at todays card..... can someone work out the points system on Ballarat and canterbury...

I have only 2 chances at Ballarat (a lot will depend on the unraced runners in the first 2 races).....My market is Dunn $2.20, Williams $2.40, Duric rough chance at $10....write your own odds the rest...should be interesting to see what odds they put up......

Canterbury is very open but Bowman will start your fav..... not convinced he can win but finding someone else is very hard also......

Whats everyone's thoughts????

Bendigo odds up....

C WILLIAMS $1.70 (8 rides)
D DUNN $2.50 (7 rides)
V DURIC $8.00
M RODD $13.00
C SYMONS $31.00
ANY OTHER INDIVIDUAL JOCKEY $41.00
S KING $51.00
D BRERETON $61.00

I didnt think there was a lot between Williams and Dunn..... Dunn has 4 favs in the first 5 races he needs to be 3 in front after 5 to win!!!!

I'll have $200 on Dunn at for an interest but will shop around first.....
