traditionally this has been the "low" season in terms of boat arrivals too, because it is cyclone season.

Have tried to stay away from the Politics forum lately as I tend to have my blood boil when I read some comments on here (and I have a feeling that mine would have the same effect on other people).
However, I am not sure why Abbott is madly looking around for other countries to host asylum seekers if no asylum seekers are coming anymore. It just doesn't seem to make sense to me. Or, is he actually anticipating a whole lot more asylum seekers coming, knowing that his 'turn back the boat' policy will not work once the weather is improved and they are out of typhoon season.
Even if it is working, it really just means that Australia are expecting the rest of the world to comply with human rights legislation whilst we don't. It is just shifting the problem to another country. The number of asylum seekers in the world won't decline just because Australia refuses to do its part. It really is a terrible stand by the Australian government.

I agree totally with Bennymacca btw that the Labor Party's policy is just as bad as the Liberal Party's. Both of them make me want to cry at times, with the lack of compassion they are showing.

I believe people are still filling in the form (about 30,000 in 2011) and sending it into be assessed and legitimate refugees are being admitted (about 6,000)
It takes about 1 year for your status to be assessed if you provide the correct identification documents
Jumping on a boat and trying to avoid the simple process (which is available at any embassy and online) does not give you any special privileges anymore

As stated before, this option is not available to most asylum seekers. When you are fleeing for your life from persecution, you don't actually have a chance to organise the paperwork which you would require for this option.

now now Jimmy, how many people have ever marched the streets of Adelaide to protest against asylum seekers entering Australia? If the answer is zero then by your logic there are 3000 more Adelaidians in favor of asylum seeker entry to this country than there are against it. You may need to organise yourself a rally!

Otherwise, you would not have a clue who was there *grins* After all, in a few seconds of television coverage, you don't get the opportunity to recognise that many.
I, for one, know that there were many who have never taken part in a protest march before, including myself and a number of my students.

Lots of churches as well
I'm happy for them to protest when they start paying taxes including corporate tax, CGT & Land Tax like the rest of us, otherwise, IMO, they have no right to make any political statement
