Back to the SAINTS, they've picked up a few shall we say "characters" for 2017 , not sure on Mazey's suspension and how many games, if any, are held over from last year.

I haven't heard any quality players or any others leaving, so I am keen to hear who these people are?

My loosely educated guess would be up to 4 or 5 retirements a year or two early - Alvino twins, Ferguson, Sugg, Margotich, Stone

Clearances already in for Battafioco, Lane, Sexton and I wouldnt be surprised to hear Eagleton and Smelt jumping ship too

Theres a few more tipped to join JC at Cove from his 18s team he coached a few years back like Curyer, Stringer, Cox

Played alot of kids last year but will likely lose Smith, Walton, Birbeck, Dolman, Dearman, Evriniadis. I reckon they will all make SANFL 18s

Bruce and Shurgot wont play many games

Couple of boys who are still overseas - Page, Nicholson and a few that will probably take holidays in the year when they know finals are not likely

Lack of depth and playing kids mean even quality B graders leaving is gonna be a headache

It's a sad state of affairs but they seriously need to look at this year for a rebuild and try and get some players back.

That begs the question Mr Footy where has the clubs / exec's / committee's forward planning been? its been a downward slide for quite a few years since 2013 and by your details above theirs still a way to go to reach the bottom of the slide!

saw this on the SFL Facebook page.... thoughts??

"Southern Football League (SFL) Fortnightly News

2017 has commenced with some significant steps forward on the achievement of our long term goals focussed on ensuring a strong and viable SFL for the future.
It is your SFL Board’s intention to keep you regularly updated this year – about our movement towards our long term goals and about our day to day activities.
This is the first of our fortnightly SFL bulletins to do just that.

The Big Picture

Strategic Planning

Thank you to Presidents and other Club members for their initial input into the redevelopment of our strategic plan. Feedback is also being sought from some of our key community partners. As promised, a further draft of this plan will be with Presidents and Club delegates at the end of March.
To reflect on the progress of our goals this year and to seek early input from Club Presidents and Secretaries for 2018 and beyond, a further strategic planning session will be held on Sunday, 22 October 2017 – please save the date.
Securing our Financial Position
As discussed at our meeting on Monday, Directors are working to grow your SFL’s financial resources through growing our strategic partnerships with local businesses and other organisations. We are actively and systematically meeting with potential partners and local business associations. A new partnership has just been brokered which will see $5000 provided to the SFL and a significant relationship of mutual value formed – more details will shortly be announced.
Connecting with our Community and with Community Issues
Over the past few years, your SFL has been growing our connection with our local and broader South Australian community around key community issues. Our connections are continuing to grow and more information about these connections and issues and how your Club can be involved will be provided to you as various initiatives and events approach. In the meantime, please note the following dates –
• Southern Volunteering Expo ‘Get InVOLVed’ (an opportunity for clubs to showcase who they are and meet potential volunteers) – Thursday, 27 April 2017
• Reconciliation Round – Saturday, 27 May 2017
• White Ribbon Round – Saturday, 26 August 2017
• Odd Socks/Grow (Youth Mental Health) Round – August (date to be confirmed)
• MAC Round – Saturday, 15 July 2017

Exploring Participation for 6 and 7 Year Olds

The SFL are firm believers in engaging children and their families in football from a young age through and beyond Auskick. SFL Directors are speaking with SACFL and SANFL about our intention to run a bridging programme for Auskick participants. This program will allow children who have completed an Auskick season to participate in a series of programmed matches between Auskick centres. Discussion at this stage are extremely promising. As these discussions progress, we will advise dates and format.

Growing Girls’ and Women’s Participation in Football and in Every Aspect of Club Life

As advised to Clubs, the launch of our girls’/women’s competition will be held from 6.30pm to 7.30pm on Friday, 3 March. The aim of this launch is to have Clubs hear from speakers about girls’ and women’s football and the opportunities that it brings both for players, families, Clubs and our community and for Clubs to hear more about how our SFL competition will run. Please RSVP your eight to ten attendees to your SFL office.
The second round of the State Government Female Facilities Programme grants is now open with applications closing on 10 April. This is a unique opportunity to secure funds to build women’s/girls’ change rooms and other facilities and to send a message to girls and women that they are welcome to equally participate in every aspect of Club life.

Hackham Football Club

The Hackham Football Club have appointed Luke Allan as their senior coach for the 2017 season. We wish Luke all the best and remain committed to continuing to work with Hackham to secure their future.

Club Events

Well done to Christies Beach Football Club on hosting their inaugural and innovative ‘Think Tank’ this Sunday which included community members and club members in a structured brainstorming session about their goals and strategies.
We will continue to provide fortnightly updates to Clubs about progress on broader strategic matters and also on upcoming events. We are also investigating converting this update into e news format.

Please do not hesitate to get in contact with your SFL Directors, the SFL office at sflinc@picknowl.com.au, or via our Facebook page at Southern Football League – South Australia. Your SFL Executive are currently meeting on a weekly basis and all suggestions will be given due consideration."

July 8th is a joke, odd number of teams means there have to be 2 byes in there
I am sure you are not suggesting we should be playing through Easter & the June Longweekend??

Hi the nail on the head there, 16 game season makes sense in the HFL as they will play each other twice home and away, makes no sense in the SFL.

BTW its important to note this was a club based decision not the SFL's
.

As per the SFL's post on their Facebook page, the clubs were asked to vote and a majority went for the shorter season (I believe the vote was 8-3).
I am struggling to comprehend why a majority of the clubs want to play less games.
Shouldn't a football club be promoting the playing of football and hence promoting as many games as possible??
Can anyone with links to the clubs not wanting to play a 'real' season shed any light on why their clubs voted this way?
Looking at the financial impact a little differently - will these clubs be reimbursing part of their members' fees after voting to offer less football to their members?

Due to the late notice of Hackham withdrawing there was not much other option. Most clubs were already organised with their trial games/trips etc and for a number of us ground availability due to cricket was an issue with starting earlier.

It is still an 18 week season, just one of the teams have become a "bye", so it is no less a 'real' season that the HFL.

For the record in 1990 & 1991 the SFL Div 1 competition was played over 18 weeks with 2 byes (ie 16 games), in 1983 it was a 15 round season with no byes. The sky didn't fall in during any of those seasons and I have yet to meet anyone who thought it was a lesser competition during that period.

You have Cove listed as your Grassroots team... Is your A Grade Assistant not the former Hackham A Grade Coach? And did he not take/recruit 10+ Hackham Senior players to Cove this year?

10 players may not make a team, but it would certainly break a club already struggling for numbers - no matter what quality the players are.

Rules do not allow recruitment of 10 plus players. To make such a accusation shows you have nfi. The said Coach moved heaven and Earth to progress the Hawks, SFL did not assist, yet gave higher player points to other clubs, such as the Shoes in a premiership year.

Hawks have been set to fail by the SFL not the Coach who busted his guts and own money to improve the club on and off the field.. Your comment is not worth a newspaper in place of sorbent in a public toilet.

My grass root team has nothing to do with the fact the SFL are slowly but surely destroying the comp.

SFL Clearance page shows 7 players attempting to transfer from Hackham to Cove - including Matt Paine

How's the NFI going

7 PLAYERS ? Last season we where unable to clear 2 players from Hackham and one was a Noarlunga junior 0 pointer due to a club higher on the table can not take 2 players from the 1 club ?
