Number of teams winning the flag in a 10 year period

Postby spell_check » Sun Sep 27, 2009 11:12 pm

This year will be only the fourth year since 1897 in which the past ten seasons have seen only three clubs win the flag. This year marks the 10th season in a row that Port has not won the flag. Since Glenelg can't win it this year, there remains only three flag winners between 2000 and 2009.

There have only been two years that the 10 seasons preceding (including that particular season) that 8 clubs won the flag:

With West Adelaide winning this years premiership, this lifts the number of different premiership clubs in the past 10 seasons to 4 for the first time since 1999-2008.

This is in contrast to 2nd and 3rd over the past 10 seasons (both 8 and all in the past 8 seasons). Even 4th has had 7 (and the last 6 are different)

What is Port's longest premiership drought? I'm tipping pre-war. Since then 1966-76 and 2000-15. Either way not long enough. Is the current 'drought' the record for Port (in b4 'No longer the Magpies comments).

This is Port's longest drought, having not won a flag since 1999.

The previous longest time between flags was 12 years, 1965-77 and I think between 1939 and 1951.

This is also North's biggest drought quite easily. No flag since 1991. Previous longest was 1931-1949 but even then there were the 1943 and 1944 flags with Norwood-North. The other biggest drought for North was 1972-1987.

South of course haven't had a flag since 1964. They had previous droughts from 1899-1935 and 1938-1964.

West's 32 years 1983-2015 was also a club record. Their previous longest drought was 22 years before their last flag, 1961-1983. So before the grand final, there were 4 SANFL teams suffering their longest-ever premiership drought. It was the highest number of SANFL sides ever suffering their record premiership drought at the same time (disregarding times when lots of clubs had never won a flag, e.g. the 1880s). With West's victory, that's over now.

Three longest droughts in the SANFL now are

South Adelaide 1964
Glenelg 1986
North Adelaide 1991

For the smart asses out there

West Torrens 1953
Woodville 1964 ( The year they joined)

Which club is best positioned to ending that drought??????

And don't say either West Torrens or Woodville they don't count for you smarties out there!!!!

Let that be a lesson to you Sturt. You don't beat Glenelg 3 times in a row in Grand Finals and get away with it.

Didn't Adelaide win it in the 1880s or something? :-)
