Every party in power breaks promises. Sometimes circumstances change making keeping that promise a bad idea. Sometimes the party had no intention of ever keeping that promise. If it's the party you support, you play it down or try to justify it. If it's the other party, you jump up and down about it.

17 votes in it at the moment. Very likely there will be a recount.
But the libs are right in this. This is huge as if labour win they have a majority without independents.

Labor wins by 23 votes. Big reflection on the current performance of the federal government.

While ignoring the poor financial performance of the state government (and the former federal government).

What is poor about the current federal government was that they did not present a budget that showed them as hitting the well to do harder than the less well off while trying to sort out the debt, which was central to maintaining the support of the swinging voters. They don't seem to get the importance of that.
(Nor do the SA opposition seem to, as I discussed with S Marshall at a recent Xmas function.)

What is also poor is that so many voters will support (for the gifts) a government, state or federal, that is running up a deficit so high we can't even pay the interest without borrowing even more, or selling our few remaining assets, which makes running a rescue budget while retaining enough support to go on very difficult.

It is the "make someone else pay for what I want" psychology that breeds electing debt prone governments and ultimately leads to the Greek syndrome.

:D correct. The coalition had better get used to seeing Libs losing elections - the average punter out in the real world had had a gutful of Abbott, Hockey, Corbin et all Can't see them winning a 2nd term federally unless they make Turnbull leader - and it has to happen soon.

The deficit continues to rise because of the interest, and because the ALP and the Greens are determined to not let any legislation through that may change the trend and show up their history of financial incompetence. They also see being able to call the attempts to fix it a failure as more important than leaving behind a massive debt that your kids will have to suffer for.

However, I do agree the Libs could have worked harder to come up with a more palatable package that would have gone over better with the middle ground.

Really? It's never bothered them before.. Big business is all that concerns that mob. They're happy with a growing underclass as long as there not in it themselves
