Pioneer Village on South Road. I drove past for the first time in yonks on Saturday and noted that there are now houses where the village formerly was?

Southerners may be able to shed some light on where these buildings went. Im assuming it all got carted off to what is now known as Old Tailem Town...

My grandparents still say that.

They also say "doing their block" when someone cracks the shits.
Politicians kissing babies for good luck,
TV preachers sell salvation for a buck.
You don't need no golden cross to tell you wrong from right,
The world's worst murderers were those who saw the light.

My grandmother used to refer to the movies at the cinema as "the pictures".

Yup. The pictures or the flicks. But usually the pictures.

The term "Cinema" is derived from a Greek word that approximates "moving pictures", and was in use before and during the 1920s.
So, it is no more modern or appropriate than "pictures" or "flicks".

It just came to us later via the US where we also got "elevator" instead of the English "lift".
