howard/costello battle was definitely part of the reason howard was seen as a slightly stale leader and which led to a change in govt in 2007 as well

Maybe not, but he did renege on his promise to Costello to hand over the Primeministership to him halfway through his term. This eventually destabilised the party and led to their election loss in '07.
