Labor should give Abbott his own medicine, label it the deceit tax and mention it a couple of million times before the next election.

Maybe even suspend standing orders a couple of hundred times for good measure.

If I'm going to be slugged with an extra tax, I'd prefer it to be spent rather than hoarded to balance their books.

With one of the best economies in the world and our incredibly low debt, there is no justification for this tax.

I guess it is a matter of perspective - mine is any debt not related to a saleable asset that can be used to pay it off quickly if there is a slump in income is excessive, regardless of how everybody else is doing. So, while I don't like the idea that I may be hit with a deficit tax, if I am, I'd rather it was used to reduce the debt rather than frittered away on grand popularity and vote buying exercises.

On the other hand I remember a guy with an Economics degree at a Greens function I attended arguing that debt never matters, "because the government can always print more money".

There are multiple "truths" out there.

It could be argued that we have "one of the best economies in the world" only because most national economies have been wrecked by excess borrowing and everybody is carrying excessive debt. After all, the rating systems are based on relative soundness compared to the world average, which is rather like suggesting an individual is doing well because they only have one chronically maxed-out credit card where the average is three...

They are comparable because they're all operating under the influence of the global economy.

Labor is planning to launch its own news service with the national secretary saying the party’s message is not getting through to the mainstream media.

The party is hoping to hire a journalist on a salary of about $95,000 and to create a news service in the vein of Crikey with a daily update landing in subscribers’ inboxes.

National secretary George Wright told subscribers to the Labor party newsletter about the project in an email and said it would not have the “filter” of mainstream media.

Wright told Guardian Australia the party was hoping to hire a serious journalist with political experience to fill an editor-type role.

The announcement was mocked widely on Twitter under the hashtag #LaborHerald with suggestions such as Bob Carr being employed as the travel editor.

Wright said he had not seen the response on social media but “there is no such thing as bad publicity”.

the guardian and the ABC do a pretty good job at being balanced.

Fighting newslimited's bias by creating their own biased news sourse is hardly the way to go about it. What a stupid idea.

A policy newsletter, sure, but "news"? lol.

Yes, but the question exists whether the idea of running up debt to "stimulate the economy" is really sound thinking or just an article of an old faith.

My experience suggests more debt makes businessmen and other investors insecure and therefore more cautious, and thus makes the economy worse. The concern is there that a crisis will come when the debt builds up enough, and then asset values and returns will drop leaving those in debt in trouble.

I've made my investments and profits in more stable and predictable times, and most of my friends with any capital are sitting on cash reserves right now until stability comes.

Commission of Audit ... what a politically self driven ideological load of crap.

None of the Audit Commissioners have any idea about social welfare or making sure everyone gets a fair go.

It was just a vehicle to justify a budget, rather then a independent audit report. The Commission Chair is even using the same script as Hockey FFS.

Budget emergency my arse.

Should start by means testing welfare payments and handouts so that only the most need get them.

So bully once again all you can resort to is "well they did it first"

Abbot, time and time again, and again, and again, and again pilloried Gillard for her introduction of a carbon tax, and now it's all good for him to do the same just because they did it?

Pretty childish really.
