Can't stand Ricciutio but his list looks pretty accurate to me. Jacobs wasn't good enough in 2013 but is certainly good enough if he can get his shit together.

Derived from Ricciuto's list:

Need to improve on 2013 and/or be more consistent: Nathan van Berlo, Sam Jacobs, Matthew Wright, David Mackay.

Looked promising in patches, (?fitness issues): Sam Shaw, Matthew Jaensch, Brodie Martin, Jaryd Lyons.

Future depends on fitness in 2014: Brent Reilly, Jason Porplyzia (and maybe Ben Rutten).

Marginal/unreliable: Bernie Vince, Jared Petrenko.

Part with: Ian Callinan, Shaun McKernan, Richard Tambling, Angus Graham, Luke Thompson.
EPIGENETICS - Lamarck was right!

I heard Monfries was about 400k and I thought that was ridiculous as well. At that stage he'd shown glimpses. I suppose us in the public need to get used to over inflated salaries of what we deem mediocre players on the basis that every game could be their last.

To get quality you need to fit one of two criteria, either be right in your premiership window and be able to dictate a pay packet (Think Lake taking a $200k pay cut to go to Hawthorn).
The more likely scenario is to pay overs to get the player in and hoping that they improve. Having heard what port offered a hawthorn free agent last year, I don't think many players will leave for much under $500k

Getting sick of reading about people whinging that so and so is on 400k or 500k and they're over rated. FFS next year the average wage in the AFL will be 300k. Therefore anybody getting a regular game and has played around the 100 game mark is going to be worth the 4-500k

Its had to tell with small forwards as to there value. But Adelaide have made a bold move to add something they are missing. If he kicks say 40 goals with the same number of goal assists next year would he be worth the money?

Also they have plenty of cap space without tippett now.

Final point I would like to make is that this is what free agency is all about. I suggest we all get used to it because this is only the beginning and the AFLPA have gotten exactly what they want. So get used to move players getting paid well overs in the future.

I think AFC has been criticised for being too frigid in trade period etc. so im more than happy for them to throw some money and lure someone to the club. I see Betts as the best available small FWD in the free agency (that would be open to come to Adelaide) and we needed a small goal kicking FWD. The money doesn’t phase me either as no doubt they front ended his contract with tippet money and for the years after that he is probably just a 300k a year player.

As you said Stan, its what free agency is about…. and definitely going to become the norm and we will need to forget the money side of things and think about the players 'playing value' to the side.

The Betts deal may make more sense than that for Wayne Carey or Tambling did.
But I really can't relate to entertainers - sport or music - getting that sort of money when our top scientists get nothing like it.

They get paid what they are worth in reality. Sports stars in general, not betts specifically, by way of the money generates through the sport. I think they get something like 20% of that. But yes I am all for engineers getting paid 500k a year :)

On betts specifically I think it's a great move. The last genuine small forward we had was peter vardy really. Callinan in 2012 was ok but if betts kicks 40 goals and sits at the feet of tex it will be a win. He will also bring forward line pressure which has been sorely lacking at the crows
