Well Played

Well done Smiffy such an effective grunt player. Played a pivotal role in our rise with his professionalism on and off the track providing great leadership right up to the end. When he started he was a skinny bugger but he did the work and bulked up to be a key midfield player during our greatest ever era.

Well done Joel Corey. =D>

Correct. But knew this a long time ago. System sucks.

I reckon he's brilliant, we should be getting a high first round pick at least.

Jordan Bannister the former Carlton/Essendon player/umpire has quit umpiring to care for his brother who is a quadriplegic after an accident in April this year. Terrible news

It would have been good to have more umpires who have played the game and I think more should be done to capture younger players who leave the AFL system and try and get them into umpiring.

Legitimate question, was he any better than the rest of them because he was seen as having more of a feel for the game?

Or did the umpires finish up turning him into a moronic robot with no sense of the game?

It's shocking news about his brother however but the comment about getting more ex players into the system needs further investigation on many counts.

"feel for the game" is such a cop out when talking about umpiring. It suggests that the umpires should be continually altering their interpretation of the rules based on how the game is unfolding. Yet we also hear the same people bleating about consistency. If umpires were truly worse than the average pundit despite hours of training and coaching then getting better ones would be easy.

Not to mention when you look at how we all treat umpires, you start to wonder why the heck to any of them bother? Bust ass, do the best you can in a role that the game can't proceed without and 24/7 you cop crap. Read some of the comments about the ump who won the house and how less deserving he was of winning and no wonder we have trouble getting any.

Fair call. Umpiring @ the elite level is that regulated these days that the feel for the game days are long gone...

Amateur level the above still has a place...

Hawks the winner there. Not often you see a club trade their No1 ruckman.

EDIT: Saints also got pick 17 so not as one sided as I initially thought

That is an insane deal in the Hawks favour

How does St Kilda think that is a good deal? Who is going to ruck for the Saints now? Last one out turn the lights off.

Brod it puts alot on Hickey now to carry them next season. I agree that this seems pretty average. But it all depends on how they use pick 17 and how much value Savage adds to the team.

Surely Longer will not head to the Hawks, so maybe they will look to on trade pick 17 for him.

Savage not in the Hawks best 22, Hickey not as good as McEvoy and has not played enough to ruck the whole game. They will desperately need to find another bigman.

Graham Wright mentioned that the Hawks still want Billy Longer as well.

Saints must be working on some other deals.

This is from a trade discussions page online as options for St.Kilda.

St Kilda use pick 17 for Billy Longer (effectively swapping Mcevoy for longer and savage)

St Kilda use Pick 17, Sam Fisher and pick 3 --> GWS for Pick 1

St Kilda use pick 17 for Billy Longer, and then give up Pick 3, 21 and Sam Fisher --> GWS Pick 1

I didn't notice the pick 17 when I saw the news.

Yeah for all the hype (but what top 10 doesn't) that was put on him. His pre season was really good though.
