And this is the problem with the eagles. There have been quite a few occasions over the years where we have targeted a recruit, got close to sign him, only to see him snapped up by the AFL in the draft leaving us with........nothing.

We should not have been targeting Gray. Yes he is a great player but it was more than likely he was AFL bound. Meanwhile, other really good Port players who are good at SANFL but probably not good enough for AFL (e.g. Kirkwood) have been targeted by other clubs and will be signed. So we miss out yet again. Who is your Plan B eagles? No excuses.

From what I've heard kirkwood was very close to signing with eagles but it looks like sturt have pipped eagles right on the line.

If the rumours are indeed true regarding Beard and Kirkwood to Sturt, when will an announcement be made?

Eagles still scratching their head about how Sturt outbid them for Beard and Kirkwood, thought they were signed, sealed and delivered.
Panic will see them desperately try to sign Boyd.

Well maybe if they'd made those guys their number 1 targets from the beginning instead of going after Gray then they might have got them.

They signed at Sturt for less than Eagles offered financially. Were more impressed by Sturts overall package including their vision for the next couple of years. James Watt on board with them too. Beard and Kirkwood considered to be leaders of the young pack at Magpies, wonder if some others might follow of their accord once the Blues are endorsed by these guys. IMHO these two represent the most valuable Maggies to pinch. West have been very quiet so far but need to recruit big time to replace our losses, much less go forward.

What was the vision.......a permanent fence around Unley oval and fulltime poo pickeruper!!!!!!!!
Eagles appear to be better placed financially, with a great crop of juniors and a proven coach.

They have to actually draft him! I don't trust them. They promise to draft Gray so he doesn't sign with Eagles or any other SANFL team and then the Power don't draft him and he has to play for the Power Magpies Reserves. Surprise!

This is Port were talking about, they have lots of runs on the trust scoreboard don't they.

Didn't your club model itself on (copy) Port Adelaide just to learn how to achieve some (ultimately short-term) success?

I'll take 36 Premierships over cliche's about "trust" any day.

I thought it was only 34 as the last 2 premierships were won by the Port Adelaide Magpies Football Club. :)

Panic doesn't always mean your decision is the wrong one, sometimes it's making up for a lack of planning but is the right choice all along!
Boyd is a top player in the SANFL without doubt, and our midfield loses us finals.... the last three!

Is it some sort of shame to model a process from another club, one which has had success?
You're telling the story.

Short-term success? In the short term, 12 seasons of success which we enjoyed was a long period of time, was it not? Whether it is going to provide genuine long-term success over multiple decades, that's yet to be decided. I'd still be happy supporting that at SANFL level, rather than an Academy side.

For once I agree with you holden78, they must go after and secure Boyd but it does cause a bit of consternation when your best laid plans are scuttled. Just doing a few more character checks on Boyd. Eagles might also be trying to snaffle another SA player.

The next time Keith Thomas uses his already tired phrase of the "Port Adelaide community", i'll think of young men like Beard and Kirkwood. Wonder what the spin means to them.

Think it was more to do with the group of young players around a similar age who are taking the club forward and showed improvement through the year. The Port boys have said they have liked the game style and way Sturt have gone about things against them this year. Obviously they don't agree with your assessment of the playing and coaching stocks.

Bottom line is with OUR AFL players coming home, there's only so many spots on the SANFL list. Some will stay at Alberton and reap the benefits, others will choose to move down to other options.

They might get to play at a successful club then.
