Having played with and worked under this bloke for majority of my senior footy i have nothing but praise for him, took BL from div 6 to div 3 over 5 years which is a fantastic effort! To the boys out at Elizabeth, you have snared a beauty and i guarantee you will love the guy, he is not only a professional on the field but is also a great bloke off it, you will have success on the field and many a great night off it with this guy around the club.

Yes Cossi the club has done very well in getting Payney on board, a new challange for him and hopefully can have a similar impact at the Eagles and get them up the grades.
With the signing last night of a gun recruit and a few more in negotiations atm, the club is definatly heading in the right direction.

Care to share who the gun recruit is?

just a debatatable topic for today...

as a new coach coming in At Div 5....is it more important to have good set ups or just bring good players. both are important but.

For example, I'll use Carey Payne to Elizabeth

Elizabeth last year were a good solid side....

If payne was to come in and purely take that group with his systems and finish in the high end of finals it would prove a great coaching effort??

If he recruited well and achieved the same high final placing...has he done any better than a previous coach??

Obviously only using Payne as a relevant example....I think he has fantastic record.

If he recruited well and achieved the same high final placing...has he done any better than a previous coach?? Gross underachievement ;)

Obviously only using Payne as a relevant example....I think he has fantastic record.

The latter would depend on injuries, depth etc as well of course....

*edit* PLUS - there is no way in hell that he'd let Walton's 2's finish higher than him

Or the latter could mean...the coaches message / strategies / relationships didnt mesh with the culture of the new club, thus requiring the coach to add strings to his bow in order to develop further as a coach.

furthermore...if a new coach takes over a good side and adds good recruits and then wins a flag....Is he a good coach or a good recruiter. Some would say that some sides that have won flags over the years didn't even need to be coached. Get an influx of Dive 1/2 payers to a good div 5 side and happy birthaday

This is why Im thinking it could be a 2 horse race between Glenunga and Elizabeth next season. All the rumours about their recruiting this offseason makes me think these already strong sides are just going to get stronger, and going to make it difficult for the bottom 5 or 6 clubs. There will be 1 or 2 other clubs that could push them.

But ya never know what can happen.

Put it this way...if a coach took over a side who finished in relagation zones and kept them in a division with no recruiting and winning more games than the year previous...is a good sign that that coach had some positive influence on the group and the result from previous year. At least you could measure unchanged dynamics....don't get me wrong...I'd rather take on a good side, add to it and win a flag LOL

Well if you consider recruiting part of the coaches job, and he brings recruits in that make the difference, and they succeed, he's a good coach.

Any time there is success at a club, you have to assume the coach did a good job. There's not really any way to gauge from the outside what is actually making the team perform well. If its the coaching, or if the players are taking it upon themselves to do the job the way they know they can.

If the club fails, it will always fall on the coaches head. If there were substantial recruitments during the preseason, they will always be considered duds, and bad recruiting by the coach, especially if there's player payments involved.

This also applies if they dont improve on their finishing position from the year before.

1 more at least. Its always going to take time to turn a 7th place team around.

I was more referring to teams that are on the brink of success, like Elizabeth and Glenunga were last season.

I think we'll possibly have some new recruits from what I've been told but I'm not sure of names yet, will find out who we've picked up when preseason starts I guess.
