I'm pretty certain he wouldn't have been on that tour if it had not been for the fact that he went as back-up 'keeper.

Zoehrer was back up 'keeper on the 89 tour

Well there you go, for some reason I thought he was back-up -keeper.
He did go on at least one tour in that role. Not sure which one.
The other reason I thought he was in that role was that I assumed Tim Zoehrer was still in the black books with the ACB.

Maybe Valetta was the back-up 'keeper and Zoehrer was the third spinner ;)

What was the story there? He seemed quickly dumped despite doing decently enough I thought in 86-87 and I recall reading rumblings about an off field issue or dispute being a factor.

The same rumours were about when Dean Jones was dropped prior to the 92-93 series. And for that matter Hookesy after a good 82-83 summer apparently because he was outspoken about something to do with the ACB or the selectors post the 1983 World Cup.

Valetta was "back up" 'keeper on the 91 tour to the Windies.

He also kept in the third one day international match on that 89 tour when Healy and Zoehrer were injured, which may explain why you though he was teh back-up keeper for that great tour.

I have a video highlights of that tour by the BBC.

S Waughs forward defence at Headingly on day two for four...

Must get that video transferred to DVD

Still took over two years from when Simmo was releieved of his position (1996) until Boof debuted (India 1998).

I always felt Boof lost momentum when he moved to Victoria because from memory the pitches weren't the same quality as the roads at the AO and he seemed to drift off the radar a little bit during that time.

I'm sure he still did well for the Vics but IIRC the scoring wasn't at the same volume as it was prior to the move.

As far as I recall $$$$$ was the main motivator

He got an offer too good to refuse. The Vics were in the middle of a very lean run in the Shield at the time.

Others may have some inside info to add to this.

I always had it in my mind that an offer from Carlton Cricket Club lured him over. Not sure if it's right or not.

Think he went into some detail in his book.

Felt that he was unfairly being prejudiced by playing for SA on Adelaide Oval 5 games every year. Wasn't getting anywhere with National selection so decided to change people's thinking by playing home games elsewhere.

Carlton Cricket Club (run by John Elliot as was the Footy Club at the time) put some very enticing offers on the table to supplement his First Class income (remember very few full time professional First-Class Cricketers in those days). Boof saw out one contract and then decided to return home for family reasons (think his first marriage had broken down and moved back to SA). Carlton CC put an even bigger offer on the table for him to stay but he declined and came home to SA.

Was so annoying having Lehmann, plus Nobes, playing for the Vics at one stage #-o

Although I think Nobes' issue was more related to an issue with someone at the SACA - who would have been coach when he left? Philpott?

We've been fairly fortunate to have a few decent Vics play for us though over the last 20 years though, so can't really complain - Siddons, Hogg etc. Matthew Elliott was another "big name", but struggled with injury though unfortunately.

Didn't both Boof and Nobes win a Shield with Victoria?

Fleming was another, but I reckon, similar to Elliott, his best was behind him, by the time he got to SA.

I recall the talk around Salisbury at the time was he had been offered 100k by the Carlton Cricket Club.
Not sure if there were rules about states poaching players at the time and hence the offer came from "Carlton".
