Until the season starts and you're as shit as ever. :) Seriously though, if the Dees do come good hopefully you'll get excited and take your eyes off the ball in the Shield. I think we are 1-1 in our head to head meetings and you're a guy I have to overtake to get back into Premier finals action.

GO DEMONS. Boo Captain Who!

HOGG PREMIER LEAGUE PREVIEW 2014

Greetings Hoggsters and welcome to the eighth season of the Hogg Premier League. We haven't lost any of our coaches this year and we welcome two new accomplished SuperCoach players in Buddy Franklin (Masha) and Has Been (One Club Player). This field is the best quality yet for Premier with the average season score for participants based on last year's scoring being 50064, or an average of 2177 (divided by 23 to accommodate the three bye rounds where you field roughly two thirds of a team).

Hogg Premier has twelve coaches that scored more than 50k last season so predicting who might win the Hogg this year is a near on impossible task. In this preview I have ranked sides as top four, middle eight and bottom four.

Top Four

I think the premier will come from one of these four sides. I reckon Hondo is overdue for the flag as history has shown it's difficult to win this league more than once, although Darkisders have proven it can be done.

Q Before You: The reigning champion had his side sorted out well in advance of the rest of us and is shrewd in his forward planning. He has made the usual 'woe is me' pre-season noises, the calling card of the shark. Let's hope he really has naffed it up this year.

Has Been: Some successful Divvy I coaches in the past score heavily but fail to get the job done in their first season of Hogg Premier. The head to head pressure in this league is a real challenge as there are no easy matches. Some Divvy I coaches' scoring takes a heavy hit when they first encounter this pressure but Has Been has been very consistent in their scoring patterns and is likely to secure a double chance.

Hondo SSC: Hondo is always a threat and is a perennial power in the Premier League. I would expect Hondo to be up there again and in fact I think he can win the whole thing, which means, he's now screwed (just ask CoverKing). One of the teams to beat for sure.

Captain Who?: Groover has one of the best records in the Hogg and is always a prized scalp. Not only does the Captain score well most weeks he also wins matches which is what winning Hogg Premier is all about. Some coaches score ok but don't win matches (DOH) but the Captain is the complete package. I can see him making it three grannies in a row this year.

Middle Eight

When you've got NFI who is going to win a chook raffle, predicting who might make the eight is an even bigger stretch. Taking the easy way out, I've nominated the contenders for the finals who could get lucky and snaffle the flag if they have taken a conservative approach and have trades in the bank. Of course, you're hoping that the top four have bubkus in reserve.

Darksiders SCE: The Darkside has the best record in the Hogg but this chap was most difficult to track down this pre-season as he appears to be a very busy man at the moment. While being time poor doesn't necessarily preclude you from winning the flag the comp is getting harder and he has less time to put into it so I can see him doing the unthinkable and missing the eight. But then again he could win his third flag!

REBCats: Scoring up and winning down was the motto for the Cats last season and I reckon I'm surely overdue for a bit of luck. I'll be staying away from injured players this season so look out for the durable premium that I'm sure to hobble this year. Still haven't given up hope of winning this league but this comp is improving faster than I am so top eight at best for the Catters.

Longwood Lions: The Lions are off to Brazil I believe this season and a similar absence during last year's comp cost Alaska the chance to have a better debut Hogg season. If he is in fact going away during the year then finals will be off the agenda but he's good enough to be a pest late in the season like he was last year. Seriously, priorities man! Brazil over Hogg glory? Pffft. ;)

MILLER MOSQUITOES: The Mozzies used to have a pattern of one good year one not so good but they broke that pattern last year with a solid season. I think they can be mid-table again and threaten all teams in this league.

Cork in the Ocean: Corky is yet another solid side who has worked his way up through the ranks and is now a seasoned Hogg Premier coach. He hasn't quite got there in this company though so he remains in the middle rung of coaches who are good scorers but not winning enough matches to threaten the top four. Corky could be one that misses the eight this season due to the rise in standard but shouldn't be in the frame for relegation.

Underdogs: My mate Gibbo (sharksta) is an astute coach and is the best Female coach in the Hogg. The Underdogs are always a challenge and I think they are due for a good season this year. I think they could challenge for top four and end up around 5th come August. One to watch as usual.

Squeakeroos DTC: Squeaky's career highlight so far in the Hogg was his upset Division I win over the 2010 Hogg Premier winner Darcy DTF. So far in Premier he has shown an ability to score points, but too often they don't win a lot of early matches and are forced into catch up mode. I don't think Squeaky can win the comp but they are a realistic chance to sneak into the finals.

CyrilandDayleShow: In round 1 Cyril will be suspended and Dayle will be at Box Hill. Could it be that wycbloods are no show? I made the mistake of writing him off in the pre-season last year and will not be repeating my mistake this year. Bloods has shown that it is possible to forsake point scoring early on and shake up the finals once you get there late. He scored very well towards the end of the year last season and if he scores early wins this year look out. Top eight.

Buddy Franklin: Buddy didn't score as many as some other Divvy I coaches last year but got the job done and here he is to Mash it up in the top flight. I'm not sure a low scoring approach would work in Premier as I can't think of a side who has won it using that method in this league. Buddy will find the lack of easy kills in this league alarming especially if he goes 1-3 early. Having said that, he's no easy kill either and I can see him winning his share of matches, but maybe not enough to make the finals in his first year.

Spuds: The Spuds didn't get warm last year and surely they won't beat Masha ha ha. However, a late season surge and a few favourable wins against fellow contenders could see Matt make the finals for the first time at this level. Spuds don't have the same pedigree as some Premier sides but a good season this year would soon fix that. I can see them winning enough games to compete but probably not enough to make the eight.

Bottom Four

These are the sides that will have the shadow of relegation hanging over them. There are three teams in this section that have played nothing but Hogg Premier since it's inception and the team I tipped for the flag last season. The teams I have selected for relegation are regularly down at the arse end of the scoring and you can't keep doing that in this company.

Richo Richo Man: I made the mistake of talking them up in the pre-season last year and will not be repeating my mistake this year. CoverKing has just graduated I believe and there is a lot going on in the coaches life. Life? What's this life? You can't have a life and expect to beat a Fantasy Footy nerd. Nope. Won't happen. When Richo does have time he'll be his normal competitive self but his head to head record isn't great and last year he lost his point scoring as well. Will probably do enough to avoid relegation though.

Poon Army: One of the joys of pre-season is writing off my work mate Troy in the Hogg Shield and who am I to deny myself this pleasure this year. I reckon Hammo knows the least about footy out of all the Hogg coaches but he does know how to play Fantasy sports. No other coach reads up on point scoring and rules as much as Troy and this is what makes him dangerous. Last year he was the master of the rolling lockout but I got the feeling we all started to catch on a bit towards the end of the year. Advantage us. A relegation chance this year ha ha. :D

Ginger Ninjas: Here is another bloke with not much time as he has kids popping up like Mushrooms around his place and he's the boss at work so no rest there either. Gingernuts has become a bit of a lurker on this site due to the responsibilities mentioned above but this year he cops the drop I reckon. He's only had one decent season in Hogg Premier but I hope he stays up because I'm his bogey side and I need the points. Relegation looms.

Hawkeye: I reckon it's about time that Woggy copped some of my luck and got some of his. Fair dinkum this bloke has been kissed on the you-know what in terms of soft draws, low scoring wins and oppos sides copping the vest and or injuries. This year the chooks will come home to roost and there will be no flyer from Hawkeye this season. Divvy I next season and a spoon chance.
