He's not a bad writer is Kimber.
But...as a radio commentator, he sounds like a kid who's been allowed to sit at the adults' table and is trying to impress with his knowledge.
He tried very hard.

I hope it works out for him, he just needs to relax a bit.

Going on from jims post in the redbacks thread.

Another second innings failure from Lyon.

It's alot like Watson who can make 50's but struggles to turn them into 100's

He bowls brilliantly in the first innings of games but is yet to play and part in a second innings

What does he have to work on, he is definatly our best spinner but this is a massive flaw in his game, was out bowled by Smith in the second dig

Lyon is still the number 1 spinner but hope SOK gets a go if we use 2 spinners in the Emirates

Lyon was never going to take a bag with the opposition in stonewall mode.

He is great at creating scoring pressure and manufactures wickets from that. Fact is, there was no pressure to score in this second innings.

The good spinners find ways to take wickets around that.

The great spinners do.

Lyon is good, but not great.

Semantics, I know.

Tend to agree, it was all set up for him especially against the bowlers.

Clarke set brilliant fields for him and have him every opportunity if he could have gotten one to get something from pitch

Obviously he will never spin the ball as much as a leggy but just doesn't seem to have any weapons where he can get the batsmen out rather than the batsmen getting themselves out.

If he could develop a decent doosra or something he could be the worlds best spinner

I'm a Lyon fan, but the problem with him is he is a one trick pony - no variations not even in pace, just a constant hit the spot finger spinner.

Get me in the side i'll turn em square :P

Interesting Nathan Lyon stat is his record in first innings of a match and the last innings of a match

bowled in a 1st innings- 13 times, 27 wickets @ 29.70 with a strike rate of 56.4

bowled in a 4th innings- 20 times, 24 wickets @ 35.62 with a strike rate of 78.4

Will also be interesting to see what Siddle does now that he isn't a certain starter in the test side.

Without playing the T20 and ODI internationals he is now at risk of losing his CA contract especially considering there is no test cricket until October.

Will he look to make a push to get into the shorter form sides.

The Pattinson selection defiantly proved to be the right one and unless Harris doesn't pull up from his op it will be very hard to see him getting back in that side especially with the likes of Bird, Cummins, Sayers, Behndorff, Coulter-Nile around the mark.

The Lyon talk is interesting, we all know finger spinners dont turn the ball as much as a leggie.

I actually think that Lyon compliments our pace attack beautifully.

Havent looked at his ratio of wickets but obviously he gets more in the 1st Innings than the 2nd

That in itself says alot of his quality bowling on pretty good batting strips and yes obviously getting wickets when attacking shots are played.

Wasn't that long ago he picked up 5 wickets in the 2nd Innings at the MCG though.

Plus you get just a bit more with Lyon, he is a half reasonable bat and if anyone can tell me who the last spin bowler to take 3 catches at leg slip in 5 tests i will happily supply you with a carton of crown lager ;)

Still our fourth quick in the pecking order, I agree we look better with Patto in. Only thing to cost Sids fourth sport bowling would be if Faulkner gets back in as an all rounder.
If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation.

You forgot starc too, though they may not go with him and Johnson in the same team.

Really hope rhino gets to play out the next ashes, he deserves it.

Past that point, Johnson pattinson cummins would probably be our best attack.

Great win by the Aussies, geez our team looks real good at the mo.

Johnson is on fire, Harris what an effort and Warner really came to the party!!!!!!!

Huge series by Philander 7 wickets at 51 massively over rated!

Terrible series from Philander in his own backyard, didn't even look like getting a wicket for the majority of the time he bowled, made a nice century with the ball in the final test to cap things off for the series.
