Scams

Postby Psyber » Fri Feb 14, 2014 11:12 am

We have all been aware of scams since the wide use of the Internet, but I've always been concerned that other alleged charities could also be scams, and so I have been very selective about where I donate.

This one is disturbing: http://au.news.yahoo.com/a/21427972/car ... lchildren/
A charity which says it helps children who have fallen behind at school has collected nearly $1 million in donations, but cannot account for how all the money supposedly paid to beneficiaries has been spent.

I have also been a bit wary of how much money actually gets to the beneficiaries of charities. Many years ago I had boarders, one of whom was a clothes sorter for a well known charity. She received a volunteers payment. I would assume other staff, supervisors, executives would also get payment. I wonder how much of a donated $ goes to payments of staff/volunteers etc.

If people do want to donate to charities, best to donate to the well known or registered charities. If a charity is new or unknown, best to check first on the charities credentials.

If someone is collecting for a charity, whether on a public street or at your front door, always ask for ID. Legit charities will always give their collectors ID.

Far too many occasions there have been shysters/fraudsters who supposedly collecting for bushfire/flood victims etc but just pocket the takings. If they don't have ID, tell them to F*** Off and call the cops.

A little bit on the Salvation Army finances back in 2005:

The Salvos raised a record $53 million in last year's Red Shield appeal, but few donors would appreciate that they are Australia's fourth biggest church with 2004 revenues of $625 million.
