Central District’s Paul Thomas has made a speedy recovery from a punctured bowel, with the veteran set to play against Glenelg at Playford Alive Oval on Saturday.

Thomas – who was hospitalised with the serious condition for more than a week – is likely to play a half in the clash which will now start at 4.15pm.

‘’We’re almost certain he will be all right to play,’’ Central chief executive Kris Grant said.

‘’We always knew he would do the right thing and make sure he could return as soon as possible.’’

Jack Oatey Medallist Trent Goodrem has responded well to treatment on his thigh, the versatile utility also poised to line-up in the club’s first competitive hit-out for the season.

‘’He’s up and about as he has been in full training for at least two weeks,’’ Grant said, adding former Magpie Justin Hoskin will make his debut for the Dogs.

‘’All of the boys are looking forward to it as it has been a very hard pre-season. They are looking forward to having a decent kick.’’

Of the Bulldogs’ recruits, Ben Mabon (twisted knee) and Tim McIntyre (hamstring) have been ruled out for at least a fortnight while former Brisbane Lion Bryce Retzlaff is expected to play a half against the Bays.

Glenelg defender Max Proud is making a bid to play in his club’s first match against opposition despite dislocating his finger in an internal trial last Thursday.

Veteran Ty Allen (knee management) and Lewis Hender (knee reconstruction) will be held back until later in the month.

‘’He’s flying at the moment,’’ Glenelg football manager Matt Lokan said of Hender.

‘’He could play this week as his knee has healed well but it is just a matter of him getting some confidence in it.’’

Key recruits Sam Lonergan, Mitch Thorp, Aaron Joseph and Clint Alleway are all expected to don the black and gold for the first time.

Norwood forward Michael Newton has recovered sooner than expected from a serious ankle injury, allowing the former Melbourne spearhead to confront South Adelaide in the Reserves at
Hickinbotham Oval on Friday evening.

‘’He’s probably two weeks ahead of where we thought he would be,’’ Norwood football manager Mark Ross said.

‘’We will give him a half (this week), then a full game in the reserves and then the last league trial (match) which would have him ready for round one.

‘’His recovery skills have been pretty good. It has healed quite quickly but there will be no risks taken with him.’’

Star recruit James Allan (hip) has been ruled out while forwards Mark Evans (knee surgery), Josh Donohue (calf) and Matthew Panos (hamstring) will also watch from the sidelines.

Versatile pair Michael Chippendale (ankle) and Ed Smart (hamstring) will almost certainly miss round one after suffering recent injuries at training.

South Adelaide will welcome back a host of big names for its second outing of the pre-season, with Nick LIddle, Xavier Gotch, Joel Cross, Josh Thewlis, Caleb Daniel, Nathan Daniel, Tarak
Redigolo and Keegan Brooksby all likely to play their first match of the year.

However, the Panthers are unlikely to be at full strength until their third pre-season contest against Sturt on Saturday March 22.

‘’There will be some guys who will miss this weekend,’’ South football manager Neill Sharpe said, adding the league match starts from 7.40pm at Noarlunga.

‘’Our last two trials games will be pretty close to the way we line up in round one. It will just depend on how many numbers we want to run through on the day.’’

Long-term knee victim Peter Rolfe has joined in non-competitive training and is on track for a return between round three and six of the premiership season.

Yes. He understands he will be the only player in the competition needing to prepare for that kind of treatment

How did Thomas puncture his bowel? Chicken bone? Am I the only one intrigued?

Correct! Unless there's any other triple Margaret Medalists with a hip injury running around. ;)

While some minds boggle about Thomas's injury it sounds bloody painful, poor bugger!

I think he's pretty accustomed to having a bloke on his back.

Does he normally play the trial games?

Damn right it does. Was it a training accident? Food related? Hernia?

Boys against men out there ATM. Surely it's not too early to predict another long year for the Panthers reserves coming up??

Hard to judge trial game form but most seasons my money would be on Souths ressies to finish bottom two.
