Essendon

Talk on the national game

This is just a small ripple of what is yet to come. Most of the players that have been suspended have many years of footy left in them. Now that their reputations have been tarnished. Who will want to trade with Essendon now for any of these blokes that would want to leave? What about the players that have been traded to other clubs? What will mean to those clubs? The mental pain these blokes are going to go through with abuse and forever be known as "Drug cheats". It is dark days at Essendon and it will take a mountainous effort to keep supporters loyal and see this through.

The players pay the price now. And its a big price.

I think Essendon will also pay a hefty price, perhaps in the longer term once the finger-pointing and civil actions start to fly. It'll be interesting to see the reaction of its sponsors given today's decision.

This is going to affect the club, the players, the sponsors and most importantly the supporters for at least 5 years. We are totally screwed. Well done Essendon board and everyone one involved in this scandal that has now left all its loyal supporters feeling shamed and totally disappointed. I feel so ashamed and embarrassed.

The other disappointment is that this whole debacle reflects poorly on the image of the sport itself, right down to its grass roots, given that the AFL competition is now pretty much seen as the sum total of Australian Rules Football in broader public opinion.

I disagree, somewhat. The players had to do more to protect themselves, they had to either question the process, not participate or ask the AFL / AFLPA to look into it at the time. I don't believe the players took enough measures to ensure their own health and safety. At no point has any player claimed to have been threatened or coerced into participating in the program so it seems they willingly accepted the process. They should have, they simply had to know better.

I have empathy for them with the questions over their on going health that will seemingly never be truly answered.

On a side note, didn't Dank once state he has evidence to clear all parties? Might be a good time to come forward, Stephen.

This may be the take-home message from all of the Essendon saga.

In light of today we may see that the level of trust shown by players towards club officials/medicos/coaches evaporates. No-one wants to see lawyers accompanying players into training sessions, though.

They're looking for someone to run a drugs cartel over there after a recent arrest. Dank is the perfect man as he can run things and somehow have nothing stick to him when caught

There is probably going to be a lot of "if onlys" but you cant help but think "if only" they did what Cronulla Sharks did and took the 4 week penaly offered at the time.

They were fined $2,000,000 and missed the finals in 2014, wasn't that what happened there?
