Definitely the 90's, although I did enjoy the 80's too, well the bit I saw on "The Winners" anyway.

But yeah the 90's were great, lots of high scoring, before the negating tactics of the last decade came in - eg. '93 - Essendon v Geelong, when Salmon and Ablett both kicked bags in a very high scoring game..

There was also classic State Games, such as '94 at Footy Park, where SA won by less than a kick.

Currently Fox Footy is showing a game from the 90's - I think its '94 - between Collingwood and the Eagles. Brings back a lot of good memories from that era.

That's probably the game in which a bloke called Andrew Tranquilli kicked 6 goals for the Pies on debut.
He was virtually never heard of again.

Kicked 4 goals with his first 4 kicks in AFL footy and ended up with 6 for the day. Played over 100 games at the Eagles but definately never reached those highs again

The 90s for me. Caught a glimpse of the '94 Qualifying Final between West Coast and Collingwood on Fox last night, much better viewing in a low-scoring game than most of what we watch today. Lots of one-on-ones, less stoppages, less crap holding the ball decisions, much better product.

I loved State-Of-Origin footy. I know I'm a dreamer, but I wish they'd bring it back....
Politicians kissing babies for good luck,
TV preachers sell salvation for a buck.
You don't need no golden cross to tell you wrong from right,
The world's worst murderers were those who saw the light.

SOO footy was for a thing for a bygone era. But it was fantastic in its time.

Watching this game, reminds me how strong a mark Brereton was.

Was just refreshing to watch a game where players actually played a set position and 40 blokes were not around the ball. Umpiring was a lot better aswell and you could get away with a bit of back chat to the ump.
Some say the skills weren't as good and the fitness definately wasn't but I find the 80's far better to watch.
The goal kicking accuracy has also got worse IMO

actually found an article on such a topic. it was from 2012, but I dont think it would have changed too much in recent times. but it seems there is a definite trend towards more accurate goalkicking.

http://www.theage.com.au/federal-politi ... 25s2g.html

in general though, we probably expect more from our professional footballers, particularly from a set shot where they dont have pressure from defenders (which would have been higher than in the past and could explain any decline)

they wouldnt have that data, but would be very interested to see the breakdown of set shots vs other shots and the accuracy of both over the decades to see whether the set shots have increased.

i would also hazard a guess in that a higher percentage of shots were taken from closer to goal in years gone by too. 55m out used to mean you were hitting a full forward on the chest 20m out, nowadays it means having a shot usually.

95 Anzac Day match on Fox Footy last night, imho one of the greatest games of the last 40 years, and possibly my favourite game of all-time.

Plenty of run, hard tackling and bumping, some great contested marking (Alessio's grab a pearler), and two teams that kept attacking.

He kicked a good one, but I think the one you're referring to was against Carlton?
