Round 1 - South V West Post Game

Postby DOC » Sun Apr 06, 2014 7:44 am

South Adelaide
14.16 100
West Adelaide
8.3 51

South on top all night against a depleted West side. West had only 26 inside 50's which is probably about Souths best defensive effort in memory. Both sides gave away many free's that were sloppy (mostly bad tackles). I think West only had three set shots all night and struggled to get forward. Apart from Schmidt who was a tireless player in the middle and Homburg who ran hard and rebounded well, West probably didn't have any other clear winners.

Brett Eddy with 12 marks and 4.4 played his best game for the club. Keegan Brooksby stayed on the ground and ran Peter Nelson ragged. Josh Thewelis playing off half back was a key influence as was Brad Crabb who spoiled everything. Guilden and Dale had good debuts and Jake (Darth) Veide ran very hard to make contests. He may be our most improved at this early stage.

Our pressure was good all night which kept the ball in our forward line for prolonged periods and to be honest we did not capitalise on this as much as we would have liked.

Crowd 1602 (my count). BBQ excellent

Good to see South back up their excellent pre-season form.

Early days but West look suspect at the moment.

Hope that crowd is wrong .... very disappointing if correct.
Can there be just 800 supporters from each club actually going to the football ?

Best game I have watched South play for a long time and great to see a win at home!

New game plan is delicious and South were as physical as I can remember in a long time, Thewlis bump in the 3rd quarter was inspirational and something South have lacked!!!!!!

New recruits all looked good our midfield depth is a lot stronger this year and Liddle & Crossy in particular will benefit so much from the support of Dale, Gulden, Rose & Mcleod.

Eddy dominated up forward and looks extremely fit and we finally have some height in our team with Boyd and either Bass or Brooksby up forward also.

My best players were Eddy, Brooksby, Thewlis (back to his best), Dale & Gulden

GO PANTHERS!

With Birss, Hartlett, Fielke, Hill, Still, Green, Webb and Bricknell all to come back soon all is not lost.
South fans in the stands thought they won the Grand Final.
All is not lost yet at Westies.

Don't think anyone at South thinks we have won a grand final but after the year we had last year when we were simple not competitive to get a win at home in round 1 against a team that has smashed us so often in recent years (twice 100 plus floggings in 2013) was great to see.

Westies were horrible defensively for the first time in years.
Not having Ferguson, Tippett and Mangan is really going to expose us in the back half.
Yes we have a ridiculous amount of players missing so early in the season but I didn't like anything about last nights game.

Probably the fans got very excited considering westies have rolled us something like 13 out of the last 15 games.

Nice to get the win and not just focus on Wundke and had multiple goal kickers like Rose, Eddy, Dale with plenty of singles from the on ballers.

Lovely to open up the account :)
Is out of change.....thanks Cambridge Clarrie!!!

Not this shit again

South won, there fans got very excited (who could blame them after all these years) and celebrated what would have been a very enjoyable night for them.

If you don't like seeing people over joyed don't go to the footy.

Well done south and their fans

We were very poor and south to their credit did what they had do to - They were well drilled and the scoreboard probably flattered my side.

Ah so the 4,000 promised per round is spread across all games, not just theirs.

Well done to South. If any club needs a feeling of hope it's them.

Spot on Hammy. Everyone likes to see their team win. If it doesn't make you happy, then you are watching the wrong team.
Plenty of cheers after the game at Rooster Park and they were only playing a reserves side ;)

It is worth noting that South also had a number of first pick players missing, Darcy Hourigan, Caleb Daniel, Seegull, Taylor, DeVisser. The Panthers played exceptional team orientated footy with total commitment which was missing last season, Brad Gotch has a modern game plan that frees up the players allowing for speed and attaching football which is good to watch. Westies still well in the game until overrun in the final quarter and have plenty of upside as do South who can improve on what was an impressive first up performance which must be sustained and that now is the big challenge.
