Poor crowds now because of ???

NORWOOD
This is the way I see it
My team won the last 2 SANFL flags
But finally losing players to the AFL teams has taken its toll
Then Norwood lost its super performing coach
Norwood is more or less a skeleton remnant of the Bassett days

B GRADE INVADERS
Now we have an AFL invader in the comp destroying the opposition
Between the 2 AFL B grade invaders , they have taken a lot of talent from every other SANFL club
So no other A Grade SANFL club has AFL players dropping back
This means the talent of the 8 SANFL A grade teams is arguably at its lowest off all time this season

PRODUCT
Now I'm asked to fork out $14 to watch these games
Nah, no value for the dollar anymore, not for an eroded product
I have my Norwood seasons pass , so will venture to some of my clubs games
I also used to watch about 10-20 neutral games per season
But I will very rarely ever go to these games now

STANDARD
In essence the AFL has eroded the SANFL
The SANFL is more or less a feeder comp for the AFL
there are no long term champs and superstars in the comp
The SANFL was once a step away form the AFL in the 1980's
Now it is a step ahead of Amateur League

PAST
I am glad to have followed this comp since the late 60s
I've had great entertainment
I enjoyed being a passionate supporter

NOW
I watch and follow the SANFL
But the passion and the parochialness is abated

Poor crowds ???
Well its now minus one more often because of me

So all of the above is just because of the afl reserves teams?

Still using the reserves teams as the source of all ills

Top of the table clash, Port pumping as a whole club at the moment. Sturt having new found success. Perfect weather conditions.

Yep which a lot of the pro AFL reserves fans don't understand.

While it may not be the sole reason a lot of people have turned away for a lot of people including myself and my mates it was the final nail in the coffin to suggest that the SANFL will bendover the every AFL request and that the SANFL has no future in doing so.

By 2020 the SANFL will be an under 23 feeder comp. Where mid season AFL drafts will be the players main priority and winning the SANFL will be a clubs second priority behind how many kids they can get drafted into the AFL.

Its not a critisim of Port,

like I said I believe it was a very disappointing crowd as I believe any time you have two of the biggest supported clubs in the league playing for top spot they should be able to attract 3k especially in absolute perfect weather, even with it being mothers day.

I would say the South v Norwood crowd was probably the most impressive crowd of the week considering Souths supporter base and the fact Norwood are really struggling.

The other games crowds are an absolute disgrace and almost panic stations for the SANFL.

Round 9, 2013.

Glenelg v South, Glenelg Oval. Att 1,555
Norwood V Sturt: 2,300
Centrals v Eagles: att 1,365
North v West: att 2,781

This was not Mother's Day weekend. Can't blame the Crows or Magpies for any of those very poor crowds!

There was no Mother's Day game last year, but the year before the Eagles attracted 2,038 against Sturt, with again no game being played Mother's Day 2011.

You can blame the weather though...and the lowest crowd ever at Elizabeth was also impacted by being up against a Crows match at Football Park

Yesterday there was a Port game at Adelaide Oval at the same time and while there's no doubt less overlap than with the Crows, that match also attracted 38 thousand. Also while the weather turned out to be not too bad that didn't appear likely yesterday morning, and throw in that both sides were coming off beltings. Bottom line, I would've been surprised had they got 2,000 to that game. Looking like perfect weather this coming weekend, so there'll be no excuses. Port South at Alberton should get a really decent crowd with no Port AFL. Talk of panic is nonsense!

Disregarding facts is nonsense.

Membership is down at the majority of the eight SANFL clubs, that's the ultimate determinant of the health of the comp.

You just pop your commemorative Tex Walker mullet wig back on and leave the discussion to the grown ups.

Woodville Crowd was 1,747 ... alas it was what we were worried we would get when you mix Mothers Day AND live TV coverage. Too easy to do the right thing by mum at lunch and have a look at the footy on TV later.

By my calculations that is 9,844 for the SANFL Charity Round or AVERAGE of 1,969 per game.

As WHUFC said , no criticism of Port (even though you knee jerked) but it probably is disappointing given your whole "One Club" thing the fact you are flying and playing another well performing side .
"cool story though bro" Yeah that really gives a lot of credence to whatever you are saying.

I know this has been done before, but I'd like to see an updated analysis of the weekly attendances in Adelaide for AFL and SANFL combined.

My reasoning is that in the glory years of the 70's and 80's, the average weekly attendance in the SANFL would have been approx 40,000, give or take a few thousand.

When the Crows entered the AFL, obviously SANFL attendances dropped but the Crows would have averaged over 40,000 for home games in the early years.

When Port entered the AFL in 1997, obviously there were more attending AFL matches at Footy Park as we basically had a weekly match here. Of course SANFL attendances suffered again, but the total weekly football attendances in Adelaide increased, probably around or above the glory SANFL years.

The weekly AFL and SANFL attendances have seemingly steadily decline in recent years, more so AFL than SANFL, until this year for the AFL.

So my point is that although it appears that SANFL attendances have dropped this year, Adelaide Oval attendances have dramatically increased. Now the novelty factor of a upgraded Adelaide Oval, plus a resurgence in Port's on field success is obviously a major factor.

It appears to me that this year could be the highest attended season (AFL and SANFL combined) ever. Maybe I'm wrong because I'm not anal enough to record the attendance stats for the last 100 odd years.

So to those that are anal enough (yes, we don't understand why you do it but we love you for doing it), are you able to confirm or deny my flimsy hypothesis.

If in the unlikely event I'm correct, then the SANFL will continue to bleed as the State Government, SMA, SANFL and SACA will rejoice about the rivers of gold delivered by Adelaide Oval. Add the relatively good ratings for SANFL on channel 7, there will be less concern from the powers to be about the falling SANFL attendances.

A rambling load of crap? Maybe it is or maybe it isn't.

Interesting question, SANFL Annual Reports may provide some answer.

Yes, I do a lot of SANFL crowd analysis (it helps part of my job at the Eagles) but even I don't do figures with AFL & SANFL combined.

Just TWO WEEKS AGO, there was 27K at the SANFL and 47K at Port v Geelong. I think combined it was about 75K ... I would be surprised if that had ever been surpassed.
