Foxtel Cup 2014

Postby Jim05 » Mon Apr 28, 2014 8:21 pm

I know there is very little interest in this comp but I havnt seen one advert on Foxtel promoting this years version. Found out purely by accident that West start their title defence at AO tomorrow night. Strange that no Westies fans on here have made mention of it either.

In a weird move, the reigning Tasmanian State League premiers South Launceston didn't come back to that competition for 2014, with the majority of their premiership players going to the new club that was initially going to be 'Prospect State' but was then launched as Western Storm. So the Foxtel invitation was handed to that brand new club that had never played a game, in preference to the TSL runners-up Burnie.

Last time that a SA/Vic/WA club lost to a Tasmanian club in an inter-club match? Must have been a long time ago. Given the bitsy history of the current Tasmanian representative, tonight might not be the night—but gee, the Westies side doesn't look too fearsome. Tonight certainly will be the night for a minuscule crowd, though.

Not too many names I recognise there. Is it virtually a reserve team you are putting out?

West's team makes a mockery of the comp really, hardly recognize any names, basically a Reserves team with 10 debutants.

Could be an upset, will be as embarassing as when Port lost couple of years ago to a Qld team.

Dont think this comp will be around much longer!

Needs to be relaunched as a Pre-Season comp over 3 weekends and at the same time the remaining 8 SANFL teams could play a 3 week knockout pre-season comp of their own.

Then you can leave the real season for the real matches that matter and don't have to worry about fixturing issues caused by the Foxtel Cup. Plus, you might get a bit of media coverage in the pre-season which was non-existent this season with the AFL already 3 weeks in to their season by the time Round 1 came along for the SANFL.

The Western Storm sounds like a combination between Perth's Rugby Union side and Melbourne's Rugby League side.
Adelaide Oval will be rocking that night!

Not to contaminate this thread, but presumably there's a rule (for the future) that AFL reserves teams are persona non gratia?

was just about to ask the same question before i saw this.

and what about the VFL teams like the bullants who are kind of half a reserves team?

I love this concept, they need to try and tweak it a bit though so that it can flourish. Playing second string teams against each other on a tuesday night hardly seems the best way to encourage the concept though

I think the organisers are keen to let the crowserves play because they guarantee a crowd in excess of 4000...
