Retirements - 2014

Talk on the national game

Re: Retirements - 2014

After 14 seasons at the elite level, 2004 Premiership player and former Port Adelaide captain Dom Cassisi will pull on his boots for the last time this weekend.

Cassisi will play one final game - against Melbourne at 12.40pm on Sunday at Adelaide Oval - giving him the opportunity to farewell the supporters who have been a fundamental part of his day-to-day life since he was drafted to Port Adelaide with pick 50 in the 2000 National Draft.

Cassisi leaves the game happy - with his career and where the club is at.

"To win a premiership and wear the captain’s number one guernsey is just such an honour," Cassisi said.

"[But] I think it’s time for me to hand the baton to the next group of young players coming through.

"I leave the game really happy and content, particularly with where the club is at right now."

If this week is a "farewell game" I'm not sure we are in a position to give Dom a game for the sake of giving him a game.

Was midfield and forward line green as well?

By the way, average age of the side was younger than the fabled Baby Bombers.
So...probably could have been considered green.

Yeah, never thought Hinkley would be one to gift games, very odd. I'm sure Paul Roos has made a note of this.

I wouldn't have thought Port Adelaide would be the type of club to gift games.

I thought the same thing. Nothing against Dom or having a go at the power but if i was roos i would using it as a 'these blokes arent taking use seriously' motivational factor.

Yeah he is being brought back in for his last game, but lets not forget that, whilst fit, Dom was in our starting side, and comfortably.

I don't agree with farewell games, especially given port's current predicament, but its not like we are playing a bloke that hasn't played a game all year and is nowhere near our best 22.

Hence where I disagree with the concept of a farewell game, if a player is clearly being brought back into the side for that reason, and is undeserving.

As for other comments being made that we are not taking Melbourne seriously- I disagree with that, as Dom is a part of our best 22 when fit, and comfortably. In this instance we are not gifting someone a game who doesn't deserve a spot on ability.

I have no problem him getting a farewell game IF he is 100% fit.

Why isnt Dom playing the rest of the season? You will have to ask him that.

if he is fit and in the best 22 he plays the year out. otherwise he is being gifted a game. if he is fit, in the best 22 but doesnt want to play the year out, then it is clear he has lost motivation to keep going, or the coaches have told him he wont be picked, which are both bad reasons to have him in the side for 1 more game

With Dom's position within the club- I very much doubt he has lost motivation, or that Ken has told him he will no longer get picked.

Dom has been rotated in and out of the side throughout this season to give him rests, so its obvious his body cant withstand 22 games of footy, but at the start of the season its likely he would have had confidence in himself to get through the season and provide value to the back 6 group, namely Impey and Moore. Obviously his body over the past 3 weeks has failed him and he has decided to let the young players take over.

If he is fit and deserving of a spot in the side for 1 final game, I agree with it, as he is in our best 22 on ability. Where I dont agree with the concept is if he was to be unfit, or have played in the same manner as a Tom Logan.

He is in our best 22 on ability. His body is shot and letting him down. Just because he won't be there next week doesn't mean he isn't deserving of his spot this week. Dom > Logan
