I personally couldn't stand the Channel 9 Sunday Show. It was a bunch of clowns. Channel 7 had the urbane Gordon Schwartz as host and he kept the panel in check. Most of the classier people from the league appeared on 7 and the "ratbags" on 9.

Incidentally, Gordon at 92 years of age is still going strong and is still very urbane.

How often has a side scored 20 goals in two quarters as North did in the first and last quarters of that game and still lost.

John Sandland averaged over 4 goals a game in his first 6 games for North before wrecking his knee in the last minute of the round 6 game between North and Port at Football Park. He attempted a number of comebacks for North over the next couple of years, but he was never the same player.

Sadly John died young but he made such an impact as a person and player at both of his clubs that Glenelg and North play annually for the John Sandland Cup. He of course had a stellar 5 year career at Glenelg scoring 224 goals the most remembered being the final goal of the 1973 Grand Final.

Incidentally given that the main strength of his game was his marking, he played a fine game in the 1970 Grand Final which is remembered as the Grand Final where it never stopped raining for the whole game. In fact Glenelg led that game at half time and John had beaten the great Rick Schoff to that stage. Unfortunately for him and Glenelg Schoff fought back in the second half and Sturt won the last of their 5 consecutive premierships.

PETER BAMPTON 1968
Debuted for Port Adelaide in 1919 , is a retrospective Magarey Medal winner in 1925
He passed away in 1968, so never knew he won the medal [it was awarded 30 years later]
Played 10 state games , so obviously a very talented footballer

They were proud footballers them 20th century magpies
Peter Bampton most probably loved his club
This might explain why his ashes were scattered on the Alberton Oval after his death in 1968

ROUND 1 1966

SA 7-2...10-3...15-6...17-6
PA 3-5...5-9......8-13...12-15

Port had 4 more scoring shots and lost by 21 points
Perhaps their inaccuracy cost them this match ?
Or perhaps an incident in this match may also have affected the result

ERIC FRITZY FREEMAN
Power house forward and an allrounder who played cricket for Australia
Was one of my first idols of both sports

In the above game Fritzy had to have seven stitches in his knee
A bottle top was thrown on Adelaide Oval that day
Fritzy fell on the bottle top !
I wonder if his team mates were in stitches !

1981
I had been travelling the globe
I was in Darwin late September shacked up with a sheila of Miss Universe looks
I left that to fly back to Adelaide as Norwood were in the Preliminary Final

This game was one of the most depressing games of football I had seen

GL 6-6...11-8...11-8...12-14 [86]
NW 0-1...2-3.....4-5......4-7 [31]

Here are my recollections
I sat there at Football Park , back in Adelaide for day or so , hoping my team could beat the baymen and play off in the 81 Grand Final
Glenelg won the toss , abided by the golden rule of always kick with the breeze
And what a breeze it was , worth about a half a dozen goals
Glenelg scored incessantly
By quarter time I was concerned , but I had an expectation that my Redlegs could catch up most or all of the deficit by half time
One of those strange vagaries in ones lifetime then happened
The breeze had dropped close to qtr time
During the break, the swirl had about turned , and Glenelg had the use of another breeze worth about 3-4 goals
By games end Glenelg had 3 uses of a strong breeze
55 points is a BIG win , however had Norwood won the toss that day , Norwood most probably would have won

As for me, I left the delights of Darwin to see this match
Oh the pain, the pain of it all

1981 Grand Final result
PA 14-11
GL 6-8

This has to be one of the biggest misnomers in SANFL folklore ... that Norwood were 'robbed' in the match.

Norwood were NEVER, repeat NEVER going to win this match, regardless of the wind change.

You conveniently forgot to mention that it absolutely pissed down most of the match, greatly negating the 'advantage' of the wind.

Yes, I was there.

However if my Aunty had balls, she'd most probably be my Uncle.....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Im going to make myself very very clear in this instance

1/4 time
GL 6-6
NW 0-1
Had the breeze stayed and behaved itself for the last 3 qtrs , the probability of a GL win was far greater than a NW win
I would have expected GL to win by 2-3 goals , as they had the score on the board

Start
GL 0-0
NW 0-0
IF
Norwood win the toss and get 3 uses of the breeze
I would expect Norwood as highly probable to win and even up to a similar margin that Glenelg won by

When 2 teams of roughly reasonably equal ability play each other
And there is about a 4-6 goal wind
I would expect whoever has the breeze , most probably would win MOST quarters
Having that advantage 3 times almost makes a team unbeatable

The toss of the coin in this game played to BIG a part in Glenelg winning so easily

And I'll make myself even clearer ... they weren't roughly equal teams, the Bays came into the finals as Minor Premier with a 19-3 win-loss record and 4 games clear of 2nd, Norwood were 4th at 13-8-1 at the end of the minor round.

You can believe what you want ... 12 shots to 1 in the 1st and a 55 point final margin.

Watch the youtube of the 1st quarter, the Bays were all over Norwood, and Bruce Winter was kicking the ball out long from the defensive goal square. It was a squally and blustery wind.

Jesus Christ wouldn't have saved Norwood that day, the only way they could have won was to wear Port guernseys

Good thread through, keep them coming.

The first game I saw in 1981 was the Prelim final
I cant ague who was the better performed team pre game
GL won 19 games NW 13
Going by that, in the Minor round GL was the better team

Here are the games in 1981 between the 2 teams

Glenelg Oval
GL 2-1...7-7...9-12...13-18
NW 4-3...7-3..9-5.....11-6

Football Park
NW 5-4...6-9...9-12...12-15
GL 4-0....8-4...11-6....13-10

Football Park
NW 4-2...12-4......16-8 ..20-13
GL 4-5.....9-10....15-12...15-15

Not only did Dedjas mob get gifted 3 uses of the wind in the PF , but they didnt play at Norwood Oval in 1981
However Norwood did win at FP in round 20

I cannot comment on the 3 games, other than that at FP it was 1-1 all , and Norwood had more scoring shots in its loss

In Norwoods previous 11 games leading into the PF , Norwood had 10 wins and a loss on the last round to Port

I went to every Glenelg match, the Bays were 18-1 when they played Norwood in Round 20, were top by a gazzilion points, so had nothing to play for.

It's all academic anyway because Port blew the Bays away by 10 goals in the 2nd-semi and again in the GF.

Anything's possible, for mine no, as Port were going for their hat trick of flags, had a very strong 2nd half in the season, and Norwood would have battled through from the elimination and would have been spent (actually, they were spent in the prelim).

Also, there was the usual 6 day break between the prelim and the GF, which would have made it nearly impossible for Norwood to be competitive.

Now before everyone starts crapping on about Norwood winning from 5th in 1984, they had a 7 day break between the prelim and GF that year, which wasn't the norm at the time.

Under 19 Grand Final 1981
Central Districts v Norwood

Playing for Norwood in this game
Dean Renfrey
Greg Thomas
Roger Froggy Murdoch [father of the Murdoch who plays for Geelong]
Neil Hein [the giant rover]
Olaf Bode [Is he related to Jase ?}
Rohan Helyar

The Centrals team had 2 very interesting players

DEREK KICKETT
This has to be the one and only who played with CD in 1988 ?
Derek is related to the Buddy Franklin , no surprise , both mercurial footballers

DAVID HAYES
The horse trainer
Played CHF for Centrals at some stage [this game or later ?]
David later played seconds for CD , before his dad Colin got him into horse training

Some more on father son horse trainers

ANTHONY CUMMINGS
The son of horse trainer Bart played seconds football at West Adelaide

Yeah but it was a final, and it involved Glenelg .. They could have been playing Rosewater and still got beat ;)

We'd come from 5th and went within a bees dick of beating Port in the 1980 GF (18 point final margin doesn't show that Norwood had either hit the lead or gotten within a goal halfway through the last quarter). However my memory was always that Port were the best team of 1981, certainly they had a clear edge over us so I've never for a second thought we could have beaten them in 81'. (Unless Balmey knocked half their team out which I guess was always a chance lol)
