Auckland 9's for SANFL??

Postby PhilH » Sun Feb 01, 2015 1:31 pm

Watching Auckland 9's as first hit out of the NRL season

Could we create something similar in SANFL?.

Have a lightning carnival before the trial games. ie early March

Something to focus attention on the league

Have it say at AAMI Stadium and Max Basheer ... just the 8 solo SANFL clubs ... twopools of 4

3 minor games say each 10 minute halves

Top 2 play a final .... 13 games in total, run over a 4 hour period.

Chance for fans to see their recruits in a hit out, clubs to sell some membership & merchandise

Thoughts?

could almost call it the T10

would be a fantastic initiative.

I think the league and fans would benefit from a structured pre-season comp

What about :

Have it say at Elizabeth, The Bay, Prospect, Norwood, Noarlunga, Unley, Richmond and Woodville ... just the 8 SANFL clubs ... one table of 8

21 minor games say each 20 minute quarters

Top 5 play finals .... 88 games in total, run over a 6 month period.

Chance for fans to see their recruits and favourites, clubs to sell memberships & merchandise each week.

I watched a bit of the NRL 9's and enjoyed it more than real NRL! Did wonder how it could be a winner for footy with reduced players but unlimited interchange.

Good opportunity to spice up the preseason which is pretty dull in all leagues.

Are you talking 9-a-side footy or just shortened games?

Rugby 7s is where its at, played worldwide and at the Olympics.
The NRL 9s is just a rehash of a failed experiment in the 90s and a poor mans version of trying to recreate Rugby 7s success as a spectacle.
AFL 9s is the equivelent but would never work even at AFL level.
Rugby (and its boring little brother for meatheads, League) smaller teamed games can be played on their usual playing surface where AFL 9s needs to be played on a much smaller footy oval.
Similar was trialed a few years back at Wayville. North Adelaide are still the reigning champs

Ridiculous idea!

We have threads dedicated to the poor finances of a lot of the clubs and now people want to add another comp which the clubs would have to pay the players to get involved in. Let's not forget these guys are part time players they don't want 12 months a year taken up by footy.

but the clubs play trial matches, what the difference??

apart from creating a marketing opportunity for the league and clubs

Well the clubs would still want to play trial matches with the full 21 players to work on the game plan so you wouldn't reduce any matches just add more matches.

Yes. It's the last piece of Silverware that North Adelaide's senior side has won

It was a bit more than a few years ago, though. It was 1994. Ross Gibbs played for the Bays and Brett Mancini captained the North Adelaide side !!!!

Stick to watching your Green Bay Wackers for an off season footy fix coz the SANFL needs to be protected not diluted anymore, it's bad enough having the two AFL cancers killing off any chance of having young kids pick a local SANFL club to follow passionately!
Get the two AFL cancers to pay for free junior give away packs at every SANFL CLUB Home game!
Get them to pay for top notch give away footballs after the games too, with the local SANFL team all over the ball!
I just don't see what they actually add for the 8 clubs apart from $ ..... how about they put some real $ into the promo of the league then?

How would it give focus ? How would it sell merchandise ? Myy thoughts it might help for fitness but thats it.Need to be innovative but I think pre season comps at this level are dead and were 25 -30 years ago.
