unpiring & rule changes for 2016

Postby philcas » Fri Mar 25, 2016 9:16 am

Last night at the norwood- port game i saw the new rule changes in action for the first time . WTF are the rules commitee doing the last touch rule is a joke. How can a ball kicked 50 m up the field then from an inherent bounce the ball could deviate over the boundry & you are penilised. Then the interpritations of the rules are so technical that the umpires end up paying nearly 80 free kicks . No wonder about 10 fight broke out with players being frustrated with the descisions .

Apparently there were 72 free kicks paid for the game.

72? Jesus H. Tap-Dancing Christ. That is absolutely staggering. Surely that would be pushing a record.

A great match you should have been there.
Lot of frees paid, umpires just paid the frees, same for both teams with lots of ruff stuff.
Everyone was happy with game and entertainment.
Full points for the new out of bounds rule.
Great.
Well done SANFL rule committee.
Definitely improved the game as a spectical, lots of great goals by both teams with some clean direct ball movement.
If you can't kick and you kick down the line bad luck if you kick it out,no excuses, just improve your kicking skills.
Less boundary throw ins and stoppages.
Great.
Can't remember the last time Norwood kicked 100 points in a game.
These errors will decrease when some slow learners learn all the new rules.
Great.
I get a feeling a return to higher scores and goal scoring forwards is returning.
Johnson is only 12 goals short of Norwoods leading goal kicker last year in one game!

Vale park you have to be kidding 80 frees does not keep the game flowing. It should be gone by next year it rewards defensive sides playing on smaller grounds like Norwood it allows defensive players allowing the backlines to be left empty which risks a kick into the forward line being a defensive rebound from a free kick.
Believe me this hasnt fixed anything it just gave the defensive team an advantage

There were about 35 free paid in the first half at a North-Norwood game at Prospect in late 2014, and it was absolutely painful to watch (on top of watching North play).

Certainly that many frees must've slowed the pace of the game down. If that's the umpiring template for 2016 then I can't see many high scores on the cards.

Not sure, but there were plenty that weren't. I commented to my old man in the first qtr "fk me how many free kicks are they paying?!?!" He looked it up and it was about 13-9 at 1/4 time. Was frustrating at the time, but the game seemed to run at a frantic pace which did make for good viewing, so will reserve judgement for now.

Holding the ball rule is the issue.

To me it was obvious at the game that it was being way over umpired, plenty of cases where the players and crowd all stopped to see which way it was gonna go. As JK said it was frustrating at the time, but the game continued going at a rate which kept it entertaining. Hopefully the umps settle down a bit in the weeks to come.

The out of bounds rule is nowhere near the holding the ball or the rotations. Up the rotations a bit but also coaches might need to be smarter with this rule. Teams get tired and it will make last quarters slow and boring as they will hold games up.

Lol if any SANFL side played a amatuer side the scoring would be high

I reckon the rule came in five times today, so the counter argument is why have it

We now have different rules through, juniors, amateurs, SANFL, AFL

The out of bounds free kick will become one of the most controversial frees ever. I do not understand why it was needed in the SANFl. I was at Unley yesterday, one to the Eagles where a Sturt player kicked an incoming ball while jostling an Eagles player It travelled about 25 meters out of bounds. He had no control of where it was going. The other was an Eagles plyer passing the ball to another. It had a bad bounce, missed the intended target and went out of bounds. Result from free was a Sturt goal.

It's worth remembering that "Out of Bounds on the Full" didn't come into the code until the 60's I think (EDIT: Quick look on Wiki which is always reliable  says 1969) .. Supporters at the time might have felt the same as some do now, but the next generation probably just accept it and don't have a problem with it.

As I've said previously Im neither for/nor against at this stage, would like to see how it plays out a bit first. Certainly think the game needed to find a way to become more entertaining than it's been for the last 4-5 years. And yep I know my club has played a big part in that.

Thoughts on updated law 11.2.1 for 2015, that interchange players are supposed to leave the field now at the sound of the double siren (two minutes to go - when the Goal umpires start to move to position).

Did that occur on the weekend?

Double siren is when most sides start the last part of the onfield warm up (e.g. criss-cross handball) prior to huddling for the skipper to give his last words of inspiration!!!
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!
