I'd like to think Adelaide are on their way to doing it too but time will tell. Adelaide could have been far more successful in recent years but we had some clowns in higher roles at the club, got what we deserved by losing some bloody good talent. No good dropping down the ladder and recruiting when you make poor choices from the top. Ask Richmond, Carlton, Essendon, Melbourne, Adelaide, Port, Brisbane ect over the past 5-10 years at certain stages.

Excellent Post. Taking some ownership of past mistakes is the first step.

That old chestnut. Gold Coast have done stuff all, meanwhile the Bulldogs have soared and if it wasn't for crippling injuries could be the team having the week off this week. It's only what you make of it. Melbourne had more 1st rounders than Mike Tyson in his hey day and they did **** all with them.

It's Gold Coasts fault they've done stuff all, they clearly have a poor "culture" up there and it's not because the AFL didn't do everything to help them.

Melbourne's recruiting has been dismal, at best, since early 2000's. They've not got many right.

You've hardly mounted an argument to suggest the GC/GWS intro hasn't impacted on not only the sides at the bottom but those at the top aswell.

They can pay O'Meara whatever they want but judging on his last two seasons (and just had another OP) he won't play for them either

Whilst a lot of what you write is accurate, it's not what I was talking about. The AFL have created a system where, in theory, it simply gets harder and harder to stay near the top. Both Hawthorn and Sydney have done exactly what the AFL for so long has tried to make impossible and I expect a reaction from the AFL, as they did with Sydney, to make their model more effective.

I think the fairest system is one where the clubs can just trade a player to any club at any time. Once free agency kicks in, players pick their clubs. Only problem is the players' association just won't allow it. Perhaps giving compensation to clubs if the players don't agree to a trade would at least give the club some bargaining power.

On another note, why do we have a preseason draft at all? I'm not too sure it's necessary at all. Would be a simple matter to tell AFL clubs that delistings need to be finalised before the draft and any delisted player goes into the national draft.

My old man reckons Sloane will finish top of the Brownlow count but Danger will win it.

Imagine how good we would be if we had both of them playing for us! ;)

Big signing for the Crows today Erin Phillips!

She used to run rings around the boys at West Lakes before she had to stop playing and then took up basketball. Her WNBA team gave their blessing for her to take up the opportunity.
