UPDATE: HILTON Cartwright is in line for a shock Test debut on Boxing Day as the all-rounder looms large as one of the great selection bolters of all time.

The Zimbabwean-born 24-year-old has been called into the Australian squad for the second Test against Pakistan at the MCG as cover for a tired bowling attack.

Cartwright will now go head-to-head with Nic Maddinson for the Australian No.6 spot on cricket’s banner day.

Interim National Selector Trevor Hohns said Cartwright can fit the bill as a top six batsman.

“The bowlers got through a high workload in Brisbane and although everyone has pulled up okay, on reflection we wanted to give ourselves the option of including an all-rounder in Melbourne to ease that workload somewhat,” said Hohns.

“To do that we wanted a batting all-rounder, someone to bowl seam up and capable of batting in the top six as well, and after considering several names we came to the conclusion that Hilton fits that bill.

“We have seen plenty of him, he has performed well this season and we believe that if called upon he will do an excellent job.”

The meteoric rise of Cartwright comes just a couple of weeks after he was included in Australia’s one-day squad against New Zealand only to be released without playing a match.

However, it’s clear selectors have had their eye for some time on an impressive talent who averages 44.50 from 16 first-class matches for Western Australia.

Cartwright’s bowling figures aren’t quite as impressive, averaging just under a wicket a match.

But he is a strong right-arm medium pacer who hits the deck hard.

Cartwright has jumped fellow West Australian Mitchell Marsh in the queue, with selectors perhaps concerned that Marsh is a little underdone for long-form cricket after a recent injury.

Marsh was dropped for the Hobart Test and aside from one big score in the ODI series, hasn’t been able to put the numbers on the board selectors are asking of him.

Cartwright is the latest member of Australia’s new-look Test set-up, following the six new faces that were brought in for the Adelaide Test.

They obviously rate the guy but is this really necessary? The selectors just can't f**king help themselves they desperately want an allrounder in the team. Firstly they make a blunder and select Maddinson who was picked on potential and I knew he wouldn't be up to it and now they're looking to replace him with a bits and pieces allrounder that they're also picking on potential?

In the 1st innings in Brisbane, ( 2nd innings )

Starc 18 overs ( 38 )
Hazlewood 14 ( 42 )
Bird 12 ( 33 )

Now, the 2nd innings was a decent trundle, it was however across the end of day 3, all of day 4 and then some of day 5.

They then have 6 days off before the Boxing Day Tests gets underway. Work load?

Although his batting stats are better than Maddison.... not that, that is hard!
Get rid off Maddison and give him a go, what have they got to lose?

Marsh and Maddison both aren't up to Test Cricket anyway.

Haha, yeah think my frustration was more that Ferguson was dropped after the Hobart test, while Maddison gets special treatment, and now looking at Cartwright.

Remember when you used to have to earn your baggy green.. when there was an element of prestige about it.. when you'd spend years churning our runs or taking wickets in the Shield stuff.. ah they were the days :P

Thought the same and if he's a chance to go to India why not pick him in the test side now?

The alrounder won't bowl much anyway so why not play Head at 6 who is a better batter and he can bowl you 10 overs if required.

I think all of this talk of Cartwright playing is unlikely. He was not born in NSW, does not live in NSW does not play for NSW. Haven't checked further but hard to see him getting selected without fulfilling the NSW criteria.

I would have preferred James Faulkner than Cartwright.

Honestly Wade needs to be looked at. The number of stumpings that he missed in this one test alone still suggests hes not up to it at this point.

Must not play in India.
