2016 Draft discussion

AFL draft is on tomorrow, 25/11/16, 6.30 EST.

Pre season (if applicable) and rookie drafts next Monday 28/11.

Phantom Draft on AFL website - http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-11-23/c ... ntom-draft

Still a bit of doubt on whether pick 1 will be McLuggage, or someone else, such as Andrew McGrath.

For Port:

3 genuine mids with inside/outside capability and a tall forward, or 4 genuine mids simply must be the order of the evening.

14 & 17- Simpkin, Gallucci, SPP, Venables, Berry, Florent, Venables, Witherden, Hayward, Marshall will all be potential picks in this range. Listening to many a draft podcast, I would love a Sam Powell-Pepper at 14. I would pick Todd Marshall at 17 as the best key forward in the draft with the most upside.

30 & 31- Drew, Atley, Poholke, Clarke, Kerr, Fisher. PAFC Big Footy posters who are draft fanatics are really keen on Myles Poholke and Joe Atley in this range. Either of those two or Dylan Clarke alongside another mid and Marhsall at 14 & 17, and I think Port can consider draft night a success. Obviously the biggest challenge would be to develop the players, but looking at the player bio's- SPP, Poholke and Atley all have the body capable of playing senior football next season.

It is imperative that Port inject some midfield depth next season. A compliment to Wines on the inside is a must, which will offer support to the likes of Boak and Gray to play more outside.

Poholke trained with Essendon earlier in the season and I think we will use 29 on him if he is still there. I believe interstate clubs have cooled on Florent due to personal circumstances but he looks a jet

Agreed, Jim.

If McGrath goes to Essendon at #1, Mccluggage could easily slide to Gold Coast or even Carlton.

Agree here as the GWS wont grab him as they have that many players like him.

I said about 4 months ago we would take McGrath and nothing has changed my mind although we are really keen on Setterfield and wouldn't surprise me if we bid on him

You did indeed.

What do the Bombers need, though?

A mid who can go forward and kick goals, or a defender/mid who possesses great athletic traits and footy smarts?

Personally- the Bombers have a lot of midfield class. Watson, Heppell, Merrett, Parish all are either guns or future guns, but the dons do lack that genuine goal kicking mid.

You won't be losing out by picking McGrath by any stretch. The kid is going to be a seriously good player, but Hugh fills a need for mine.
