Not definitive, pretty sure actual footage of McVeighs fingers touching the ball was pretty definitive. Didn’t cost us the game (well it sorta did) cause we had our chances

Contentious goals ticked off by the AFL umpiring department

THE AFL says there was not enough "definitive evidence" to overturn a controversial goal kicked by North Melbourne speedster Billy Hartung in Saturday night's two-point win over Sydney.

The umpiring department has also ticked off on a goal kicked by Hawthorn's Tom Mitchell right on the three-quarter time siren of Saturday's win over Essendon.

Hartung's opening-term goal looked to be touched off the boot by Swans veteran Jarrad McVeigh, but neither the field nor the goal umpire called for a review.

As is the process with every goal, the score review official looked at the vision before play was restarted.

However, despite the ball appearing to be touched, the goal was not overturned.

A league spokesman told AFL.com.au the vision was inconclusive.

"There was not enough definitive evidence to overrule and change the decision in time before the restart of play, so the original decision stood."

In recent weeks the AFL's score review system has come under fire for taking too long and delaying games.

AFL football manager Steve Hocking has asked score review officials to make decisions within 20-30 seconds or else defer back to the goal umpire's original decision.

In the case of Mitchell's goal on the three-quarter time siren, the AFL says it was comfortable with the umpires giving the goal the all clear.

"The rule states the umpire has to hear the siren to end the quarter. The siren was heard as the kick was taken, and as none of the umpires heard the siren before the kick, the kick stands as legal," the spokesman said.
"Fellas, it’s OK to be in pain. It’s OK to hurt. It’s OK to be sad. It’s no longer OK to suffer in silence."

Booney wrote:WEST Coast star Nic Naitanui is set to miss Saturday's clash against Greater Western Sydney after being offered a one-match suspension for a dangerous tackle on Port Adelaide's Karl Amon.

Naitanui tackled Amon from behind midway through the final quarter of the Eagles' 42-point victory at Optus Stadium on Saturday and, as the Power player fell to the ground, landed directly on top of him.

Match review officer Michael Christian assessed Naitanui's tackle as careless, medium impact and high contact.

Naitanui has also been hit with a $1000 fine for attempting to trip Jasper Pittard in the third quarter of Saturday's game, while Power defender Dougal Howard has been fined $2000 for rough conduct against Josh Kennedy after a careless spoiling attempt when he collected the Eagles spearhead with a knee to the glute.

There were eight other fines arising from round eight games on Saturday and Sunday:

- Swans defender Jarrad McVeigh and North Melbourne's Shaun Higgins ($1500 each) for jumper punching each other in the third quarter of Saturday night's game at the SCG.

- Carlton's Dale Thomas ($2000) for rough conduct after bumping Adelaide's Jordan Gallucci.

- Richmond's Nick Vlastuin ($1500) for misconduct against Docker Ed Langdon.

- Saint David Armitage ($1000) for careless umpire contact.

- Melbourne co-captain Nathan Jones ($2500) for misconduct against Saint Jack Newnes.

- St Kilda's Jack Steele ($2000) for striking Demon Max Gawn.

- Brisbane Lion Alex Witherden ($2000) for striking Magpie Ben Crocker.

Meanwhile, Melbourne's Jesse Hogan has been cleared of staging after he won a free kick against Jake Carlisle during Sunday's clash at Etihad Stadium.

Based on behind-goal vision, Carlisle turns toward Hogan and makes contact with an open hand to the throat area.

Nic Nat’s was a free kick nothing more. Certainly not worth a week. Reckon West Coast May challenge this one

Didn't see the game but this one seems strange.
If it was a swinging arm that clipped him behind the ear I could understand the fine, however a knee in a spoiling attempt seems strange.

Either Dougal lined him up and kneed him in the back, in which case he should get a month, or, he jumped to spoil and made contact with the player while doing so, play on.

Agree Nic Nat's was always going to draw attention. Drove a player into the ground, always at risk of games.

Im happy with the Hartung goal decision. If its not totally obvious in the 30 secs or so prior to the next bounce then no need to hold up the game further with reviews.
This sort of thing has been in the game forever and getting a fingernail to it didn't impact the balls destination.
Im all for fixing the "howlers" but just let the game continue for such insignificant cases.
Whats next, reviews in pack marks where the defender might have touched the ball first...

Howard blatant knee. Lucky.
Not Nic Nat fault he is 30kg heavier then Amon.

That was obvious though.

Personally it should just be for goal line decisions. It’s clearly not set up to adjudicate those touched ball scenarios

My comment wasn’t in reference to Hartungs goal, I just think they are taking it too far in general.
If obvious over rule otherwise leave it with goal umpire and get on with it.

Yeah fair enough. It’s just such a half arsed system. Wouldn’t be hard for them to do MUCH better if they wanted to spend the cash (ie have lots more high speed cameras in each 50m, sensors on the posts to register if the balked touched it, or something like Hawkeye which could easily track deflections

But yet they go with a shitty camera in each post and that’s it

West Coast have a responsibility to the game to challenge Nic Nats ban. Absolute joke thats a week. Its a free kick for in the back and nothing more. I watched nearly every game over the weekend and there was 2 things that stru ck me with tackling.
I reckon there was at least 6-8 occasions where you could see a bloke was going to be run down and in each case the tackler clearly got into the back much like Natanui but you can just tell the umpire is gooing to pay holding the ball before he is even tackled. His mind is made up becaues you can see what is going to happen. You still need to be tackled correctly.
The 2nd was players getting pinged for holding the ball when the tackle barely retarded them at all. Very quick on the whistle

You can’t bump anymore and you can barely tackle either now.
It’s a joke.
Nic Nat couldn’t have done much more given the speed they were both going.
It was in the back like you said but nothing more.

MRP said Nic Nat had both his arms pinned before driving him into the ground.
1) Never drove him, just momentum of 110kg guy going forward.
2) 1 of Amon arms are free.
3) Deemed as High Contact,it's not.

Give it 20 years and the game will resemble Galic Football. First the bump went, now they are pushing harder on tackling (in particular how you bring a bloke to ground when you tackle)

Give it time and we will all be talking about how the AFL are taking the 'tackle' out the game.

On point 2 why didnt Amon drop the ball and put his free hand down to brace for impact? Obvious;ly because he would then be done for dropping/holding the ball. Amon chose to not give up a free instead of looking after his own welfare. Too many players now dont know how to protect themselves.
I just saw the Tomlinson one which drew a fine, Tomlinson actually pulled out of the contest to both protect himself and the Geelong player, how anyone could see that as reportable is beyond belief.

So we can have “accidents” in bumping where players are concussed (Burton on Higgins 2 weeks ago) and get off, but not in tackling?
Give me a spell. This isn’t even reportable - the outcome is irrelevant.
It’s not Nic’s fault he’s 30kg heavier.

agreed on all counts. ridiculous that he should be suspended for that. they want him to "turn" amon when he tackles. which would likely mean he would get done for a sling tackle
