Then the following week the team that scrapes thru with the tough Prelim goes on to be Premiers.

OK, did some checking from last 10 years to check my memory.
These two seasons are the only ones that went the other way. Four years there was no close Prelims.
But four of the last ten years my theory stands up.
2020 Richmond (6 points) beat Geelong
2016 Bulldogs (6 points) beat Sydney
2014 Hawthorn (3 points) beat Sydney
2013 Hawthorn (5 points) beat Fremantle
