Best 21 that played in the vfl/afl from your club!

Postby sturt1 » Sat Feb 10, 2007 12:21 pm

I dont know if this topic has already been and gone, or if you people have any interest in it but................
name your best 21 players that have come from your club and played afl/vfl.
But it was more than a victory for Greece. It was a stirring example to free people throughout the world of what a few brave men can accomplish once they refuse to submit to tyranny.

McAlmanac as an Eagles supporter would you also consider
Michael Long or Robbie 'Mad Dog' Muir
Or is that too West Torrens for you're liking? :?
Allen Jakovich played for Woodville at one time too!

I forgot Hogavich! Long didn't play for Woodville. Muir actually played some good footy in his 4 games with the Warriors.

Plenty of firepower on the forward line.

I'm joking mate!
It's like Sydney Swans laying claim to South Melbourne's history!
Or Brisbane Lions & Fitzroy!
Or (This might cause a stir) the Power laying claim to Port Maggie's past glories!

You can't include players who have played AFL/VFL before going back....

It has to be players your clubs produced that have then gone into the AFL

G Cornes S Copping T McGuinness
T Hall S Kernahan C McRae
K Cornes P Weston D Marshall
M Viska C Cornes A McKay
D Kernahan R Jameson D Grenvold
B Ottens C McDermott K Hodgeman

M Bode P Rouvray M Liptak

Thats my best 21. Others might add Nick Daffy, Jim West, Michael Murphy, Ben Moore, Luke Ottens, Allan Bartlett, Matthew Golding, Chris Duthy and Tony Symonds to that list if needs be...

We got Berbs from Essendon U/19s, his first senior game was with us and then he got drafteed to Essendon after a year on their reserves list, but we recruited him from the AFL so he doesn't qualify under my criteria, likewise Wayne Henwood as we got him from Sth Fremantle i think.... and the way I interpret Sturt1's initial statement

Next year you'll be able to add "son of Peglar" to that list as he'll be a gun......

Bloody cheeky bays claiming Royce Hart! :)

Do they have had to play league footy for your club? If not I'd rate Carey as the best with D.Jarman second but I'll think more about this before putting a team together.

FF A Didak, S Hodges, A McLeod

HF B Abernethy, D Russell, B Pickett

C N Buckley, R Ebert, G Anderson

HB S Burgoyne, G Phillips, M Leslie

FB G Wanganeen, D Mead, G Johncock

RUCK
D Hynes
C Bradley
P Burgoyne

INT: C Ackland, S Tregenza, D Smith

EMERG: R Delaney, D Brown

Not an easy exercise at all, i've probably left some players out and put in some players who i shouldn't. I've included McLeod and Buckley because they were drafted whilst playing league footy in the SANFL.

I thought about putting Corey Enright in but didn't because i dont think he played League footy at SANFL level.

???

Bloody cheeky North claiming Peter Carey even though he never played VFL/AFL, he certainly never played for North   , St Kilda tried to get him though in the late 70s

Wayne Carey - 2nd most famous Carey in Australian Football history :D :D :D :D

In 1969 the Tasmanian played 2 Grand Finals in a fortnight wearing the Black & Yellow/Gold
for Richmond followed by Glenelg... (Vietnam & National Service had something to do with it!)
Sadly the only flag won by the Tigers that year was the former beating Carlton!
Whilst the latter went down to the Double Blues!
Bit before my time anyway!

I've taken the more difficult route of only including Norwood-bred players who subsequently played VFL/AFL. I've even excluded Matt Primus as a native Victorian, although he could arguably technically qualify as he played a full season for Norwood before playing his first AFL game. (Phil Carman was also a native Victorian, but played 4 or so seasons for us, which has to be enough in anyone's language, and unlike Primus was never on a senior VFL/AFL team list before playing for Norwood.)

FF: Stephen Rowe, Phil Carman, Steven Pitt
HF: Roger James, Matthew Robran, Graham Molloy
C: Tony Francis, Scott Burns, Nic Fosdike
HB: Jared Crouch, Craig Kelly, Martin Pike
B: Michael Taylor, Tom Warhurst, Nathan Bassett
R: David Pittman, Keith Thomas, Jack Oatey*
Int: Brett James, Rodney Maynard, Jonathon Robran
Emg include: Glenn Molloy, Tom Harley, Adam Heuskes, Neil Hein, Grant Tanner, Jonathon Ross, Stephen Patterson, Scott Bassett, James Gallagher, Donald Dickie, Stephen Daniels, Andrew Pascoe, Justin Staritski, David Gallagher, Cristian O'Brian, Brenton Klaebe, Sam Smart (!), Scott Robinson, Nathan Irvin (1 AFL game!), James Weeding**, Mark Jones**, James Pyke** plus a clutch of young'uns still making their mark in AFL. There might be some geniuses that I've missed, who others recall.

* Oatey played just a token number of games for Sth Melb because he was stationed in Melbourne on national service in WW2. Still technically qualifies!
** Definitely drafted by VFL clubs, but I have no idea whether they ever played a senior game (or even went over to Melbourne).

A very good team generally, with an absolute dream backline. Even an AA player in Heuskes, the current Geelong captain in Harley, and one of my all-time faves in Rod Maynard, couldn't force their way into it. Not 100% happy with the forward structure; Andrew Pascoe and Jonathon Ross could both conceivably have claims on FF, but the players selected all demanded a spot in the 18 IMO, even though there isn't a specialist FF among them. Anyhoo, with that backline, the forwards would only need to kick 10 goals and we'd win every game!

Did JR play 1 game for Footscray- I know he went over, but court action forced him, home, but did he actually play? I nearly included him, but didn't- surprised you omitted Carey, as he was a North product.
