I abhor people finding any excuse to play the "racist" card and this is a prime example of that.

I think the word "racist" should only apply when hate or negative discrimination is the main motivator behind it.

Calling your team the "Braves" would be akin to calling your team the "Vikings", or the "Crusaders", to epitomise fighting spirit, as opposed to some sort of negative, hateful discrimination.

Beating up a guy because he's black. That's racist. Naming your team after a race, known for their bravery and honourable traits, I can't fathom how that could be seen as racist or offensive..

The native Indians themselves want it changed, and have been pushing for it for years.

I'd check that fact and I'm not referring to just one team here. I'm sure there are plenty embroiled in this situation.

I was refering to the Redskins name.

Yes I did read that section, which also states why those surveys are unreliable. So you're saying Native American groups haven't been pushing for changes to the names they deem offensive for many many years? They are the only people who count in this debate.

I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying there's every chance those groups are a vocal minority and other Native Americans don't care. Culturally insensitive to some, I can accept that.

That's all I'm contributing to this topic though. I don't really care either way. Just hate it when the term racist is needlessly bandied about like a bulb of garlic at a vampire.

In light of this, do the Salvation Army now have to consider changing the name "The War Cry" for the publication they release?

I also hope that leprechauns aren't offended that the Boston Celtics have used them (very successfully) for decades as their mascot.

War cry is something all militaries do.

Salvo's are offensive enough.

Leprechauns aren't offended.

So was I, and as Psyber was referred to Redskins in his post I was retorting that, some people have got to learn to read.
If you support the use of Redskins you support the use of Abbos or Niggers for sporting names.
Absolutely not one bit of difference. Awful racist derogatory terms in this day and age, all 3 of them.
I don't think anyone has made a racist comment in this discussion but some people are ignorant as mentioned before, that's fine as long as people are willing to be educated about issues. I was ignorant on the term redskins for many years myself.

So adjustments are gradually occurring and minorities feelings are being listened to.

My original comment was about the likely original intent of using the names, which may have generally been seen as less offensive then, than now, by the public at the time. That may be because the minorities are now allowed more of a voice as our society matures, which is a good thing.
It is good, too, that the clubs are seeing reason gradually.

It is reasonable that names and logos change if they are increasingly the focus of feelings of offence.
It is just important that this been done by calm discussion, without excessive emotionality and abusiveness.
Calm discussion brings us together, emotive abusiveness polarises, and may thus delay the very result the offended desire.

Those who seek change must be reasonable, too, in accepting that mental adjustment and change takes time.

A-f***ing-men to that, brother.

There's one thing worse than that though; People who think that we should celebrate Halloween in Australia.

I know. My wife's Canadian, and she goes on about how she misses Halloween, so I offered her a plane ticket.
