Re: Diary of some pregnant blokes

Bump!

I'm very happy, excited and relieved to announce that my wife is 14 weeks pregnant (15 this Friday). Very happy and excited because we are going to be parents and relieved because we had a bit of a tough time on our journey to become parents.

My wife had a miscarriage in early November and it absolutely broke her. She really wants to be a mum so for that to happen to her was hearbreaking. It was so hard for me to know what to do or what to say when it happened and it left me feeling pretty useless while there were days when she didn't want to do anything because she was so upset, it's one of the saddest things I've experienced.

When she was ready we tried again and just like the first time we had no issues and she got pregnant straight away so that was a huge relief.

Everything is going is well as it should be at the moment.

Congratulations TDK. I'll echo the sentiments in that it'll be the best thing you'll ever do.

All the best!

Re: Port Adelaide 2022

Good review mate. At the ground I thought you couldn't fault their committment, but the lack of confidence with ball in hand was noticeable. Despite being goalless, 15 minutes into the 2nd quarter being just a goal behind the best team in the land was a pretty bloody good effort if supporters could look past the goalless aspect.

Melbourne are so well drilled, their tackling, speed, intensity and trust in their system is just simply outstanding.

I know this is a dinosaur ploy by modern footy standards, but would they give any thought to playing Hayes with Lycett and alternate them between the middle and goal square? Watching the other night there were times I thought the smaller players are starving without an Aerial threat (although that is tempered a bit by the specialist smalls in Gray and Fantasia not being out there) and there was a few times you wouldn't have minded seeing a big bloke steam out and clatter a few opponents in the hole in front of them.

Looking past just his own individual stats on a weekly basis, I knew the reliance on Dixon was big but probably still underestimated a bit just how big it is.

I've been saying this since Dixon's injury. Hayes must debut.

If our ball movement and forward structure is to bomb it long to Dixon and create a spillage for our smalls to compete (which I think is complete and utter garbage but that is a debate for another day), then to replace the queen chess piece of that strategy in Dixon with a Sam Mayes player type, is outright ridiculous.

If that is AFL standard coaching, then Ken needs to go and he can take Bassett with him.

Re: 2022 AFL Predictions

When is the last time a coach was changed after the season ended? Be interesting to see how this plays out, if they are going to do it then with 2 other clubs in the market place you would think they need to act quickly, if I was a Port fan I think its time to respectively part ways with Ken, everyone has an expiry date.

Will the AFL let them do it though?
GWS don't have a coach still, I'd fancy the AFL would see Hinkley as a good fit there given the work he did at Port.

AFL want GWS to not make the GF for the next 10 years?

No one would give a sh*t, so what's the harm?

Re: 2022 Adelaide Footy League - Division 2

great to see havens doing so well, getting super close to div 1 but not quite this year,

my mate plays in their d grade and he tells me their Agrade a great but the rest of their grades get flogged :D so div 1 might not be a good thing just yet
This is honestly spot on. Very good season by the A grade in the clubs first year in Div 2 while the other grades really struggled as the results and ladder positions would suggest. My interest as the season went on certainly waned and was glad when it ended.
Some people at NH might disagree with me but it would of been detrimental if we up into Div 1, would've been too hard on the guys in the B's and C's to stay motivated to play after a poor season only to go up another grade. We have lost alot of depth over the last four years and it's really showed this season, hopefully that can be fixed going forward before we go up into Div 1.

It's not a ridiculous observation, TDK. I share the same concerns with HV and their promotion to Division 3 next year.

On one hand I couldn't be happier for all involved. Seeing our club rise to heights that it hasn't seen in nearly 30 years is magnificent, but our depth is going to be seriously challenged now as Division 3 is no playground. Our B Grade hasn't been seriously competitive since the 2018 Reserves GF and in spite of the successful run of 2017-2019 for the C Grade- there has been significant change in that squad, who have found C4 tough going and will find C3 significantly tougher, in comparison with what it has been up against in C5.

In saying that - back when I was on the committee and playing A grade in the early 2010's, playing in Division 3 seemed a pipe dream. HV have always been up against it in that North East pocket of clubs which includes TTG, Modbury, Athelstone, GG, Payneham and Gaza - all D1&2 / Former D1& 2 powerhouses (with the exception of GG who have made the climb from D6 like us) - and we have had to fight tooth and nail to keep promising juniors who leave for greener pastures in higher divisions/leagues. I haven't been closely involved with HV for a couple of seasons now, but I am really excited to go and watch the lads on Saturday, and for the what the next 12 months holds for them. Hopefully for your sake, Havens can consolidate in D2 and become competitive, preparing for that jump to Division 1.

Re: Things that you rate!

The universe works in mysterious ways, sometimes. A little more than "just co-incidence"...

I've spent the last couple of days down at Robe to farewell my uncle, who passed away suddenly on NYD. "Gus", as he was affectionately known, was a big Port man, and was my PAFC historian during my younger years. Together we would watch hours of SANFL vision, in particular "the way it was *insert year*" VHS' that we would find at the local markets, where he set about teaching me about the Magpies champions of yesteryear. We would watch hours of Saturday AFL where he could follow the likes of Craig Bradley, Nathan Buckley, David Hynes, Scotty Hodges, and one young gun in particular - Gavin Wanganeen.

His one big request for when "that time" finally came, was for everyone that attends his service to be kitted out in Power colours to say their farewells, and it was a bloody awesome sight to see the droves of black, white and teal on Monday. Robe absolutely turned it on weather wise, and the service was exactly how he would have pictured it.

For anyone that is familiar with Robe township, his service was held at the Robe Institute & Library, with the paved area/main entrance off of Smillie St. Anyway, post service, as myself and his other pall bearers were placing his coffin onto the hearse and family/friends were saying their final goodbyes, a random gentleman wanders over and taps my cousin on the shoulder to ask what the occasion was, and what all the Power scarves were for. Said gentleman being Gavin Wanganeen.

I want to stress that Wanga's has absolutely no connection to our family in any way, shape or form. He just happened to be in Robe with his family, and happened to be wandering around the beach at that point in time, our congregation catching his eye.

To paraphrase Gus, I thought that was "pretty f*cking cool". He'd have been chuffed.

RIP.

Re: ATCA

Mark is hands down the best cricketer I've played with. I was lucky enough to have front row seats to some phenomenal batting and bowling.

I reckon the extra commitment to premier cricket might have been the thing turned him away. That, and ND always had a policy that if you were a batter you didn't bowl, and if you wanted to, or were selected to bowl, you'd bat down the order. I reckon Marks first year or so, he was batting at 8/9. Made his way up to 4 by the time he left but it was also a pretty strong side at the time. I reckon he'd still do alright at Premier cricket now.

The selection policy at the time was also why Rocco left ND. He told me on several occasions that he was frustrated by it. Another seriously talented cricketer!

Rocco was a jet as you mentioned

Para Teachers has a bloody good side with Mark Hanson, his brother Shane, Rocco and then a couple of others who were very good div 1 pdca players.

Never watched either Mark or Roc play outdoor, but watched them both almost single handedly lead SA to a National Grand Final in indoor back in 2004, eventually falling short to a superhuman Queensland side. The both of them were absolute freaks.

Glad to see Mark go on to achieve what he has. Super humble bloke for someone with as much talent as he has.

Williams for SPP my only change. 17 disposals at 94%, he was the architect behind a lot of I50 opportunities for Port. Re: Port Adelaide 2023

Some credit where it’s due, Ken Hinkley has definitely changed since the showdown loss and so has Port Adelaide’s output and therefore results . He’s gone away from sitting upstairs, guzzling Pepsi max/coke no sugar and the cliches. He’s on the bench, showing emotion, has a crack at journalists when they are out of line and definitely brings some urgency to the bench. Ports consistency and urgency has definitely improved - **** me dead if this happened 3-4 years back then who knows what could have happened in that time…..

TBH, I don't think Port's change in output is Ken's handy work at all. Tredrea's comments, post showdown, certainly put some heat on the club, and for the first time in what feels like forever, the media actually questioned Ken's tenure instead of cupping his balls.

Ken's legacy is that of a wonderful man manager, not a masterful tactician. The players love him, that much is evident. Not just within the PAFC, but he was clearly adored by those he coached at Geelong/Gold Coast. After Tredders' bake, I really do believe they have Ken "coaching" from the boundary, but the tactical stuff coming from the box- IMO headed by Josh Carr. After all - 10 years has left Ken looking like a stunned mullet in the box whenever the oppo gets a jump or a string of momentum. I'm not going to start believing he is a changed man, now.

I'll echo FC's sentiments, I have been closely involved with HVFC's senior football program since 2005 (however not so much since 2020, with the exception of the odd game) and never have I known us to be a high octane scoring machine. Yes, their true test will come in the next month, yes the team have deficiencies and can improve, and yes they still have to produce when it counts, but this is very different to the Hope Valley that I have come to know. If anyone ever asks what is it like in Hogg Premier the answer is this - it's like playing a final every week in the season. There is absolutely no let up. Each week when you look at the opposition you think 'cripes how am I winning this one'. Well, that's what the view looks like from 15th anyway. This week we had a number of very close games that you are always relieved to be in the right side of. The reigning premier Mediocre has found it tough to back up from last year's dominant season and they looked Gawn for all money but somehow they managed to scramble over the line by a mere two points over Watts and Motts who must be wondering how they lost that one.

REBCats and Inner Sanctum were two other sides who badly need the wins only just got over the line with Carlton's Corey Durdin the unlikely matchwinner for last placed REBCats in our desperate battle with Delicious. Another struggling side who had a big win were wycbloods who won a big win over his brother Richo Richo who stayed on top due to percentage despite the loss. Hondo continued on with his winning ways as did other top teams Captain Who, The Far Callers and Sharks.

In a week when a number of challenging teams stepped up a few top eight sides, apart from Richo, had the stumble. DAISY has now dropped three straight after his bright start to the season while FISH had an absolute shocker this weekend as they were thumped by Summer of George. The Roosters also got rolled and the top eight is going to be a real bunfight for those sides within striking distance.

There are a number of massive matches this week but the stand out fixture of the round is The Far Callers vs. Hondo . The Far Callers have an unapparelled record of success in the Hogg but come against the mighty Hondo at the peak of his powers. Winning form is good form but both of these teams have that and I get the feeling that Far Callers might just get a step closer to the top of the mountain at Hondo's expense.

regards,

REB

Re: Port Adelaide 2023

Booney & other Port supporters do you have faith in Trent McKenzie to get it done down back come the crunch time in the season ahead?

Looked like last night Rohan was going to take him to the cleaners but he bounced back. He would be one of your only real questions marks now I think?

Disclaimer; I didn't see myself saying this 10 weeks ago.

The big out for us this week was Lachie Jones who, since assuming Tom Jonas' role, has been absolutely outstanding. Boon has astutely noted that Aliir no longer plays the intercept role, which McKenzie is now playing (no doubt speed of ball movement the focus there with his penetrating kick). Farrell, Houston and Burton push high up as part of the zone defence, with Houston almost playing the traditional wingman role, given how high he gets & how much stoppages he contests.

Because we didn't want to give up the contested battle last night, the aforementioned flankers were able to continue their roles in spite of Geelong's scoreboard dominance in the 1st - Ken backing in his mids to fix their cleanliness and win the midfield battle. McKenzie was forced to a direct matchup, rather than playing the intercept role. He is not a 1:1 defender for the nimble smalls/mobile mid size forwards, so it's no surprise Rohan took him to the cleaners early. Rohan's influence wasn't a factor once we slowed down Geelong's transition and got numbers back into defence.

Had Jones had the matchup on Rohan, I reckon that first quarter would have looked very different. Not only is Jones proving to be exceptionally strong in 1:1 contests, he possesses lightening pace for a bigger bodied defender, and a penetrating kick. He would have given Rohan the physical attention that McKenzie couldn't.

I can't say I have ever been to Colonades, but Elizabeth on a Thursday night is genuinely frightening. Overloaded with gangs from across the road at Fremont Park and surrounds, it's not the place to be whilst alone.

Parabanks, whilst small in comparison with the big shopping malls, is hilarious. The treasures of the North congregate there and it's a sight.

I was once in the loos there, at the piss trough, doing my business. Dude in the cubicle began cursing as there was no toilet paper. Re: Mens ICC Cricket World Cup, India 2023.

Congratulations to Australia. Will go down is arguably their greatest World Cup win given it was on the subcontinent, beating India in the final and coming from 0-2.

Australia's fielding in the second half of the tournament was incredible and exactly why its such an important part of the game.

Got their batting order balance right, Smith and Labuschagne showing their value in the two finals when Australia needed someone to dig in a bit. Complimented the Warners, Marsh, Head and Maxwell beautifully.

India will be shattered.

Not even top two IMO

1987 is the best for the reason you listed above beat india in india (with Sunil, Shastri Shrikkanth, Dev etc), Pakistan in Pakistan (Imran, Javid, SAlim malik Qadir) and then touched up a very good English team that smoked us in the B&H WSC six months earlier. We revolutionised how one day cricket was played up until then.

Next best is 2007, great team that smoked everyone. Sri Lanka, South Africa, No one came close was just an amazing perforamce.

This team is good but is arguably ranks along side the 1999 win where we started slow and then had to perform very well at the back end to win it.

2

Not sure you can have 2007 2nd, when ranking 1987 as the best due to the reasons outlined.

2007 was outstanding, but played out exactly as it should have. 2023 has to be behind 1987, at minimum - no one gave us a chance pre-tournament and after starting 0-2, our top 4 credentials were being seriously questioned, let alone winning the final and knocking off an undefeated India, on their home soil, to do so.

For mine, this is the best. I can't recall 1987, I was too young. Pat Cummins with 2 of the best captaincy performances in my time watching cricket in the Semi and the Final. Unbelievable victory against the odds.

Hey REB,

Sincere apologies for my extreme tardiness - just confirming that I won't be participating this season. Work & family commitments have left me with no time to devote to this, and me fielding a side would be an embarrassment against the standards that Premier has set for itself for the time in which I have been a part of it.

I've thoroughly enjoyed being a part of this league and appreciate the extensive time that you dedicate to it. Wishing all Hogg players the very best for this season and beyond :)

Ran into some pretty handy sides in WCE x 2, Carlton and Hawthorn but no doubt they just werent mentally up to it on the last day

Ayres was coach when the Cats lost in 95 to Carlton, and i'll certainly acknowledge that WC were the supreme outfit in 1994. Geelong, with 2 x after the siren victories in that finals series, were lucky to be there.

Had the Cats played the ball and not the man early in the 89 GF, that may have changed the result- although, one could argue that the Cats only got as close as they did due to mounting injuries on the day. 1992 is an interesting one - Geelong were a nearly 800 point better offensive outfit than WCE that season, yet went 1/4 against them.

Re: Adelaide

Adelaide still at the mercy of a one paced midfield. Week after week "Adelaide best - Crouch, Laird, Dawson", that's all well and good to have your midfield performing week in and week out but there's a sameness about them and that sameness is pace. Dawson isn't quick, he's super smart so creates space with his smarts, Laird and Crouch though aren't explosive or big bodied so they're much the same. Crouch and Laird had 66 touches between them for 489m gained, Dawson had 26 for over 700m. He needs some help. Until Adelaide can fix this they seem destined to be 8th-12th.

At the other end the likes of Keays, Murphy, Jones ( to a lesser extent ) and McHenry get games ahead of who?

Geelong best - Nicks, Smith, Murphy, Pedlar, Berry, Stewart, Hawkins, Miers.

regards,

REB

Pedlar stiff. Should have been higher.

Re: Rd 1 Glenelg v Power @ Glenelg Oval Friday 29/3 4.40pm

I must be watching a different game to everybody else.

There is absolutely nothing about Jordan Sweet that even resembles an AFL standard ruckman. Lauding him getting 46 hitouts against a bays side with no ruckman - if that is worthy of consideration for AFL selection, then if Port weren't already ****ed....

Re: AFL Round 8

It's hard to see Port getting rid of Hinkley until the end of the season as with five wins they are going to be around the mark for Finals for the rest of the season

Fail to make or go out straight away you can see a conversation being had or Ken will arguably make the call himself given his character.

Only way he'll go before then is if they lost there next four games and that isnt happening given two of those four include North and hawthorn.

As opposed to any other time in the last 7 years where Ken has failed to take the next step and should have walked?

He has stuck around because Ken only cares about Ken and our pathetic excuse of a board are the pack of enablers who have allowed this shitshow to go on, and on, and on, and on, and on, and on.

Re: AFL Round 8

I don’t support either side, but it seems that we’ve basically had only post match analysis from Crows supporters so far, so would be good to hear from the Port side (granted, Vamos has stepped up, apologies to anyone else who may have).

Anyone? Come out from under those rocks.

LOL.

Copy the post game analysis from any Port Adelaide loss over the past 7 years and paste it here. The glove fits.

Sack the useless pr*ck, already.
