Re: Surely tha SANFL is not wavering on new rule change

South Adelaide games last year were in the main pretty average/boring to watch, as were a lot of other games I watched on C7. The combined score in their matches was just 131 points and only once did South or their opponent kick over 100 points (Power Reserves in Rnd 2). Hardly the sort of footy that will have the casual fans flocking to matches.

I'm not sure if this new rule will have any impact on the style of footy being played, but it might be worth a trial.

Re: Are the Reserves staying or going

So the league accommodates the two AFL clubs by allowing them to field their reserves teams in the league comp. This is to allow the two AFL clubs to improve the development of their players/game-style etc.

Yet on the other hand they are looking to remove such a facility to the other 8 clubs? Ok..

Would be interesting to hear what the clubs say about this and if it's anything more than just a cost cutting measure.

Re: 1197am RPH Adelaide SANFL Coverage

Really disappointing to hear this. RPH have contributed far more (in terms of coverage) than any radio station towards the league in recent years.

A sign of the times.

Season starts in less than a fortnight. If this forum is anything to go by, expect another record (low) setting season for crowds and interest.

Re: Round 4- Central v South (Saturday @ Elizabeth)

Goal Kickers: S. Overall 4, B. Eddy 3, A. Gulden 2, B. Seccull 2, N. Liddle, J. Cross, M. Rankine, E. Irra, D. Bass, R. Barnes
Best Players: S. Overall, B. Seccull, N. Schwarz, J. Veide, T. Fields, N. Liddle

Another very solid win. Started well, terrible second term (Dogs really lifted), but put the foot down after half time to run out fairly convincing winners.

Overall has had a promising start to the year after 2015 was a real let-down.

Umpires extremely whistle-happy (again).

South won the ressies by 89 points with ex-tiger Trembath kicking 7. Would be quite a while since a South's reserves team won a game by a margin of that degree.

Re: R6: South v Adelaide - Sunday 1st May @ Hickinbotham Ov

What a finish. One to savour..

Looked dead and buried 41 points down 10 minutes into the third term. The rest of the third was reasonable but South struggled to make a dent in the margin. The final term South ran the 'professionals' off their legs, streaming forward at every opportunity. A few late 'half chances' were squandered before big Bass received a free kick (I assume? as it didn't look like a mark) and slotted the match winner by mere inches over the defensive line. That was the only time South had led the contest.

Don't like to single out individuals after such a win, but really liked the games of Barnes, Hitchcock, Redigolo and Rose. Eddy also very good with half a dozen goals and he kept us in the contest early.

The Ravens appeared to play some bruise free footy at times in the final term and become fumbly. Until then they had looked too big and too good, particularly efficient when going forward.

Crowd wasn't too bad (by Noarlunga/Ravens standards), certainly bigger than the other couple of Ravens' games I've been to.

Security a little heavy handed after the siren unfortunately as mentioned above. Cant help but think if it was a game against a fellow SANFL club there wouldn't have been an issue.

Looking forward to the Legs.

R8- Sturt v South at Unley (Saturday)

STURT
Sturt coach Marty Mattner has named two possible debutants in his 23-man squad to confront South at Peter Motley Oval on Saturday.
Double Blues’ juniors Campbell Wildman (19, 188cm and 85kg) and Steven Slimming (18, 181cm and 72kg) have been listed on the extended interchange bench.
Wildman is originally from Walkerville FC while Slimming – from Unley Jets – is a member of the AFL Academy and this year’s McDonald’s SA Under-18 squad.
Currently sitting third on the premiership table, the Double Blues can draw within one win of first-placed South with a victory over the Panthers.

League
F: Greenslade, Voigt, M. Evans
HF: Hone, K. Beard, Hansen
C: Crocker, Battersby, Martin
HB: Jonas, Stephens, Harms
B: McMahon, F. Evans, Page

R: Osborn, Kirkwood, Riley
INT: Carey, Gilfoy, Wildman, Lienert, Slimming
IN: Wildman, Slimming

SOUTH
South Adelaide ruckman Peter Steffe will be rewarded for persistence when he makes his IGA League debut against Sturt at Peter Motley Oval on Saturday.
Originally from McLaren FC, Steffe (20, 205cm and 101kg) has spent the last two years in the Panthers’ Reserves developing his craft.
‘’It presents as a good opportunity for Pete,’’ South CEO Neill Sharpe said of Steffe, who previously led the ruck for the McDonald’s SA U18 team.
‘’He’s very diligent with his game and improving all the time so it’s great that he gets his chance.’’
Former West Adelaide wingman Richard Newell also appears set to play his first game for the club at the highest level after impressing in the Reserves with 31 disposals, 12 clearances, 10 tackles and two goals last round.
Midfielder Xavier Gotch has been recalled after banking valuable match fitness in the Reserves last week after overcoming a hamstring strain.
Scott Taylor and Pat Kerin have also been named on the extended interchange bench.
Defender Tom Fields will miss after having severe concussion against Norwood while lead ruckman Daniel Bass is out for two matches after being found guilty of striking Ed Smart in Round 7.
Much-improved half-back Emmanuel Irra is facing a stint on the sidelines after copping a ‘’reasonably serious’’ ankle injury against the Redlegs.
‘’We suspect he has some ligament damage but we’re waiting on him seeing the specialist,’’ Sharpe said.

League
F: Barnes, Haren, Overall
HF: Cross, Eddy, Hitchcock
C: Daniel, Seccull, Schwarz
HB: De Visser, Cailotto, Redigolo
B: Rose, Crabb, Gotch

R: Steffe, Veide, Liddle
INT: Brown, Newell, P. Kerin, Taylor, Rankine
IN: Newell, Taylor, P. Kerin, Steffe, Gotch
OUT: Fields (concussion), Bass (suspended), Irra (ankle)

Re: R9: Port v South - Sunday 22 May @ Alberton Oval

If it was over 1000 it was only the staff who tipped it over, 'Tiser says 1300 odd. Not sure if that is right, anywho, South looked very slow on the outside today, granted Port have some leg speed with our midfield group but when the ball got outside South looked one paced.

1327. Must have counted limbs.

Agree Booney on the lack of pace, was evident against Sturt the following week also. Irra has been a big loss, Hitchcock's form has dropped off a bit, while the other quicker 'outside' blokes like Rankine and Barnes didn't get a heap of it, although Barnes did make his possies count. The likes of Cross, Liddle, Seccull, Schwarz and Gotch are not what you'd call quick.

Re: Round 10 South v North (Noarlunga on Saturday)

South Goal Kickers: B. Eddy 7, J. Trembath 4, R. Newell, C. Hitchcock, R. Barnes, J. Veide
South Best Players: B. Eddy, A. Gulden, D. Bass, J. Cross, N. Schwarz, N. Liddle

North kicked the opening three goals but South had the better of the play from there on, 9 points up after a very uninspiring half of footy.

The game opened up after the break and was good to watch, a 5 goal lead trimmed to 2 by the visitors before two examples of Eddy 'magic' sealed the result.

Eddy again proved why he's the most talented forward in the comp and Trembath was handy after half time. Having said that our forward line doesn't seem to have the same balance/spread as it did earlier in the year. Great to have Bass back, the big fella collecting 21 touches.

Highlight of the day was seeing 17 blokes making the effort to congratulate 100th gamer Veide on his late goal. Team unity hasn't always been transparent at South..

Re: R13 - WWT Eagles v South @ Woody Oval

I think McMahon came in for Trembath & Schwarz came in for Newell.

I personally like it when Overall is in the league team think he compliments Eddy quite well maybe he could come in for Haren.

If Cailotto is fit I would expect him to come back into the team possible for Durdin.

Agree on Overall. Good young talent who we should be getting games into, has been regularly named in the ressies' best so cant do much more at that level.

Don't know much about him, but noticed Scott O'Shaughnessy has been named in the reserves best in 5 of his 7 games so could be a chance.

Surprised Trembath got the chop for McMahon. Daniel, Cailotto, Newell are others who should be pushing for selection. Haines and Kerin are two that have showed a bit at league level previously who seem to have struggled this year.

Heaslip, Rankine, Haren, Taylor would be a few looking over their shoulder.

Re: The never ending No AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

Junk article, although at least the situation is getting some press. (there is no such thing as bad publicity..right?)

Mentions some stats and then reminisces about the old times. Makes no attempt to delve deeper into why crowds are down. Some vague comments about clubs needing to change and find new ways of engaging the masses.

I too recall his argument when the debate was on in earnest. Bigger crowds. More media. Standard will suffer if the AFL listed players go elsewhere. But most of all, Sando and his Crows need a reserves team to keep pace with the likes of Hawthorn and Geelong. It just has to happen.

I notice in the article he states the standard of the league is dropping. That is up for debate, but regardless my assumption is that Bone could count on one hand the number of SANFL games he's attended in the past 5-10 years.

He finishes with this peculiar pearl of wisdom:

The AFL is a monster and it is getting bigger by the day. It cannot and will not be stopped. If you can’t beat it, join it.

Re: AFL teams to stay, clubs to receive $250k this year - Ol

"The scheduling cascades down on us from the AFL" he said. "The crowds have dropped off - the South Adelaide versus Port Adelaide game had a low crowd. But 39,000 people watched that game on TV, so that tells me people are interested in the competition and want to follow it

Out of curiosity I looked up the TV ratings for minor rounds

2013- 16,604 (source- article on sanfl website)
2014- 31,364 (ditto)
2015- 29,823 (source- stats nerd on a ‘big’ footy forum, so not official)
2016- 28,636 (ditto)

So 2016 has seen a 4% drop on 2015, and 9% on 2014. Not disastrous, but coupled with declining attendances it’s something that the likes of Kelly, Parkinson and Olsen conveniently ignore.

Re: 2016 SANFL Crowds

IIRC the average crowd in 2012 was around 3,400, within 4 years we have lost over 1,000 per game.

But I guess as we are getting social media hits all is OK....

2016- 2314
....
2012- 2880
2011- 3236
2010- 3073
2009- 2924

So close to a 30% drop in 5 years, and 21% since 2009.

Source is the 2013 SANFL Annual Report. Interesting that i didn't notice any attendance data in the 2015 report, unlike the previous editions.

Re: The never ending No AFL in the SANFL whinge thread

Well said Dogs72. Sh*ts me that the likes of Ruccuito and vocal crows fans on facebook etc. only think this is an issue b/c of Saturday’s result. They miss the point. They also have short memories, overlooking the fact that Port were a kick away from a flag and finished 2nd last season at end of minor round. People were complaining then, this is nothing new.

As far as media coverage goes…I tuned into 5AA sports show quite a bit last week (yes, some may question my sanity). With no AFL matches on I hoped there might be a bit more SANFL content. The Ellis-Yolmen saga got a bit of air time, and they had a chat with Heath Younie one night about the exciting proposition of playing a final. On a whim I sent them a text late Thusday, which to my surprise they actually addressed. To summarise the text it was basically ‘no AFL this week and yet SANFL still struggles to get a mention on your show. Some publicity of the other clubs may help get the 10K you want to see turn up’.

Both hosts were quite defensive about it, pointing to the chat with Younie as an example of them plugging the league, while Bickley struggled to grasp the concept that the more casual or armchair Sturt/South/Centrals supporters may be more persuaded to attend if they heard a bit about their club or a club representative was given air time to talk about the game in the lead up.

The station’s Thursday night SANFL segment and Sunday night show have both been culled over the past 2 years, this despite the inclusion of the reserves sides.

Rucci has consistently pushed the 'club model' for the Ravens. I fail to see how it would make any difference. Removes the bye in the reserves and gives them a steadier pool of top ups to call on- big deal. The elephant in the room remains regardless.

In one article he's stating the Ravens play in-front of officials and family, and in the next he's predicting 5K crowds at AFL reserve games. Rightio.
