Time for the other actual VFL clubs to make a seperate league.

You do realise I have accepted reality. You and many other are the ones that have not accepted it. You can correct me if i'm wrong but the SANFL call Port's side in the SANFL the MAGPIES. So in your words get over it and accept reality.

PORT ADELAIDE president David Koch is under fire from Magpie greats and current players - including Magarey Medallist Jeremy Clayton - as the future of the SANFL club remains under threat.

Clayton and Magpies vice-captain Steve Summerton have taken to social media to blast Koch and club chief executive Keith Thomas for not standing up to the SA Football Commission that is demanding Port choose between a Power AFL reserves team in the SANFL or keeping the full-scale Magpies.

Koch last night led a board meeting at Alberton to consider the reality their hands are tied on this debate because the Magpies do not have permanent tenure in the SANFL. The league's directors could on November 1 - when the two SA-based AFL licences are expected to be sold to the AFL for $15 million - revoke the Magpies' licence.

The Magpies' part in the SANFL would then be replaced by a stand-alone Power AFL reserves team.

Port's board last night considered an SANFL offer to:

PLACE all excess Power players in the SANFL league competition from next year.

KEEP the Magpies reserves and under-age teams and recruiting zones for only 2014.

In 2015, Port would then mirror the Crows - with an AFL team and a reserves side in the SANFL league competition. The AFL clubs would have no recruiting zone and rely on SANFL clubs for "top-up" players.

Port's board is unlikely to declare its position until the Magpies have played last SANFL game - against Glenelg at Glenelg - next Saturday.

Clayton, who retired from the Magpies last year after 125 games and with five club champion titles, attacked Koch on Twitter on Thursday saying: "Are you and the leaders of the footy club, going to roll over to the sanfl commission? 140 years of history gone! For what?"

More cutting was 2010 club champion Summerton on Facebook where he questioned the right of Power players to wear the traditional Magpie jumper in the SANFL.

"A Power reserves team will be a team full of blokes not playing for the prison bars, but playing only to try and get themselves noticed by the AFL side," wrote Summerton.

"There's a massive difference."

Summerton also attacked any plan to shut down the Magpies' under-age teams and recruiting zones in the city and on the Eyre Peninsula.

"To think that a young lad, either local or from the West Coast, can't dream of growing up and one day playing for the mighty Port Magpies is a disgrace.

"The integrity of the SANFL is now dead."

Summerton also called for the SANFL premiership flags to be removed from the Power changerooms saying: "Put them in the Magpies rooms - you didn't win them, the Magpies did."

Port's official response last night was to acknowledge Summerton's "passion and emotion". But the club added Summerton was speaking without knowledge of the negotiations to preserve the Magpies in the SANFL.

Clayton challenged Koch on Twitter to stop answering easy questions to the fans and to deal with "the tough ones in regards to the Magpies future."

What's one half baked opinion between one football slut and another football slut.
The club is full of them. I know of one bloke that grew up supporting another AFL club and Port Magpies but changed when he was offered a place on the Power board. Now it's Power all the way and the revisionist rhetoric that goes with it.

A slab of your choice to anyone who can dig up the Power logo that came out in the early days depicting a hand holding a penis instead of a lightning bolt.

I'll then arrange for that logo to be on the big screens at Adelaide Oval.

OK
I'm going to put aside the arguments presented on who is Port Adelaide in the SANFL these days. ](*,)
1877-2013
2014 +
1877+

My interpretation of a sports competition
* Where 2 or more entities compete under the same rules and regulations.*

CURRENT SANFL COMP
8 teams picking an A Grade team , and the perception it is the best available personnel on a given day
2 teams picking a B grade team , being who is leftover from its AFL team.

QUESTION
How is this meant to be a proper competition if the rules are different for 20 % of the teams to the other 80 % ?

ANSWER
My answer
Its not a proper comp anymore until:
Port Reserves and Adelaide Reserves are deleted from the comp
Or
Until CD/EG/GL/NW/NA/SA/ST/WA field an AFL team , and play their B grade in the SANFL

Add that the 20% not only have different rules than the 80%, they have different rules to each other.

Wait for a Power and Crows reserves grand final coming up in a few years. The competition is pretty much dead for the purest SANFL supporter without some serious changes or getting rid of them to the VFL.

Think you will find they they may struggle to find top up players in future at the crows if what I'm hearing is correct..... the AFL boys regard their non AFL team mates as space fillers and look down on them. Not a good look when you are supposed to be playing for the same jumper

You cant question that.

What can be questioned though is the insistence that somehow this team is still the original SANFL Port Adelaide. You know, the SANFL being a community competition full of clubs that until this year, represented the zone and the community that the team was based in. By obeying your superiors, the advertising agencies and PR specialists, you are allowing yourselves to be convinced that the community is now being represented by paid full time professionals from all over Australia. We all realise that SANFL clubs have recruited players from across the country for years, but 19 full time footballers of whom a couple may, by chance be from the Port Adelaide area is not the same.

Loyalty is a commendable trait; blind loyalty is being on the path to stupidity. Enjoy your first Grand Final as the Power reserves. I cant wait to hear the Powerrrr chant.

The are-they-or-aren't-they debate is a load of tosh in this national league reserves issue.
It clouds the issues which are of real concern, being the inequity of the situation presented by two clubs whose main goal is not the SANFL flag and have more advantages than the other eight.

I accept its not the most important tangible issue, but ideology becomes the driving force behind the tangibles.

It totally confuses me that the arguement for no AFL reserves comp comes down to $$$$. The only diffrence from playing in SA against the SANFL clubs, the same being said for the NEAFL teams, WAFL or VFL teams is travel expenses.

Yet the NEAFL one of the poorest leagues in the land has teams playing each other from the Northern Territory, ACT,Queensland and NSW flying all over the country.

Surely the AFL is contributing to that league an enormous amount of coin when they could remain state based and those funds to Fund a National reserves comp.

To the 6 clubs that voted YES.

From here on, this will probably happen to each and every YES voter :
You entice a youngster to try out at the club.
You nuture the lad, teach him the skills of the game , develop him into a very good footballer.
He stars, or shows ability.
Inevitability takes his course.
The lad gets drafted.

This has been happening for a while now , he ends up at an AFL club
Its par for course , most players strive to play in the big league

That lad might be drafted to play for any of the 18 clubs
The lad might even get drafted to play with the Adelaide Crows and Port Power in the AFL

The lad may even get to play for Adelaide Reserves or Port Reserves in the SANFL
That player plays against the 6 clubs that raised him that voted YES
The farce continues

When NT was considering joining the SANFL it was quickly approached by the AFL who convinced them to forget the SANFL and join the NEAFL helped by considerable cash assistance to overcome the fact that they have to travel every second week.

This is no different to an AFL club drafting an 18 yr old, building up his skill and endurance for 4-6 yrs , he leaves to another club in the prime of his footy career and he plays against his old club and dominates.
