Noting Booneys comments in the West Port game thread and mine in the Glenelg Norwood game there is an emerging problem with the SANFL Umpires at the minute, namely depth

Talking to a reserves umpire two weeks ago they've had no umpires with league experience doing reserves in the last few weeks as they've all been up doing senior footy

I know one umpire who got a crack at league footy is in Alice Spring on a uni placement. Tom Bryce got promoted to AFL

To fill gaps umpires have been doing double ups in reserves

This lack of depth means there's no pressure so senior umpires haven't got the pressure on them as they are unlikely to get dropped.

So the coaches son doesn't have to push over as mid zone to watch the front of the end zone stoppage and then push back to the major axis, he can do my trick and trail behind the play a MZ umpire so he misses free kicks. Like he did in the Glenelg Eagles game

Corey Bowen can ignore major and obvious free kicks s despite being in good position

I note the West and Port had two of the more inexperience umpires (<50 games I think) who are good umpires based on my dealings with them (Bennet and Hardy). I dont know if it was them or Burke that were making the decisions that Booney alluded to.

Like players the 50 game mark is that benchmark of experience and skill to umpire at League level.

I think they've got to get use the older blokes in reserves to help those that are new there and give some of the younger keen blokes a crack. We may have some pain over the next year or two but they need to build the depth of league umpires pronto! Bring the older blokes back in if they are performing which they arent now. There needs to be consequences for poor performances. Similarly encourage the younger ones with a crack and after 2-3 games send them back down to work on a few things then bring them back up.

The other thing SANFL umpiring can do is maybe link with AFLNT and send some of their talented emerging umpires up to the NTFL after Xmas so they can umpire six games, get match fit and do some heat and humidity training to build for the SANFL season.

Maybe we were lucky with the umpires we've had but in the first 4 games I've seen this year's the umpiring is the best it's ever been.
Not hard with previous standards though.

As a rule supporters over rate the influence of umpires in a match, emotionally you want to blame someone and umpires are easy targets, sure umpires make mistakes but there are also 36 players on the field making more mistakes that influence the games result much much more than the men in green/pink.

Agree never said they've impacted the outcome or results of games.

However much like players missing kicks or not adjusting/leading to the right spot/spreading to covers D 50 outlets you can see the decline in standards in our umpires and positioning especially with stoppage set ups and forward vision.

Trust me I know all the umpiring errors as I make them so I know what to look for.

At the same time watching on Sunday there were some very sexy Mid Zone chop outs by Miller and Sobieraj (the younger umpires) who as End Zone instigated a change whilst the former MZ had set kick control they ran through to become the new Mid Zone allowing their mate to have a "rest" as Defensive EZ.

In many ways its not unexpected with the increase in umpires required at the AFL level this system and natural turnover over the last few years.

AS I said there's an opportunity to get some of the promising young reserve grade umpires up and exposed to build the base of senior umpires.

2023 West End State Squad Released

A 32-player West End State squad, littered with stars from inform Hostplus SANFL League clubs Sturt, North Adelaide and Glenelg, has been released ahead of the Kia State Game on May 19.

The undefeated Double Blues, highly-talented Roosters and fast-starting Tigers each have seven players chosen in the lead up to the battle for the Haydn Bunton Junior Cup at Adelaide Oval from 3.10pm.

Seeking their fourth win in succession against the Sandgropers, the Croweaters begin training on Tuesday night at Thebarton Oval under incoming West End State coach Jade Rawlings.

With new Chairman of Selectors Tim Ginever replacing his fellow FIVEaa co-host Stephen Rowe, the final squad will be trimmed next Monday after Round 6 of the Hostplus SANFL League.

Ginever, a seven-time Port Adelaide premiership player, is a passionate South Australian and advocate for the SANFL given his role as Channel 7 commentator provides him with the opportunity to immerse himself in the competition.

”It really is a great honour,” Ginever said.

”I’ve still got all of my (State) guernseys, tracksuits, you name it, because it meant so much and it takes so much to be selected in those (State) teams.

”And then you want to honour it, so it means a lot to me to be back involved.”

Posting their first 5-0 start to the season since 1978, Sturt has prolific midfielders Patrick Wilson and Tom Lewis in the squad, together with former Port Adelaide speedster Marty Frederick.

Double Blues defenders Will Coomblas and Connor McFadyen also feature, together with 150-game goalsneak Josh Hone and last year’s Fos Williams Medallist, Casey Voss.

Bob Quinn Medallist Noah Casalini headlines the Roosters’ inclusions, with key members of last year’s victorious outfit, Harrison Wigg and Keenan Ramsey, strong chances to return.

Together with Frederick, North’s Frank Szekely looms as an ideal choice to start on a wing given his hard-running style while teammates Harrison Magor, Cameron Craig and Mitch Harvey have also been rewarded for their early form.

Last year’s West End State captain, Liam McBean, is among the Glenelg players selected, together with leading goal kicker Lachie Hosie, inform utility Matt Allen and Tigers captain Max Proud.

Bays midfielder Brett Turner, small defender Darcy Bailey and ruckman Cam McGree all have an opportunity to make their State debut.

Considering the WAFL named a 34-man squad prior to ANZAC Day, and we've only named a squad 11 days out, it's fair to say the WAFL are taking this more seriously at the moment.

How many training sessions are the SA team going to be having together? 3? 4?

I would think only 3, Tuesday of this week and then Tuesday and Thursday of the week leading up to the State game

A couple of strange selections from a North Adelaide point of view. North's 3 best players so far this season have been Combe, Spina and probably Patmore yet none of them are in the squad. Yet despite only an average performance so far by the team, there are 7 players named.

Probably a good move. Ginever's IQ is double Rowe's, and by no means is Tim a braniac.

Will have the same trainings they always have, and always get the win.

Said this couple of months ago, but what a ridiculous time to play the game, around 3pm on a Friday at Adelaide Oval with nobody watching. Will really inspire the players, what a disgrace!
